Splashes from Hindu Mahasagar -- 6 - Fascinating Hindu History

Facinating Hindu History

Pagan religions all over the world have used icons or symbols to
represent abstract and intangible objects. The fanciful gallery of
mythological deities in Biblical stories, Arabian Nights, and The
Canterbury Tales are collections of human imagination. Blowing of
strong wind would normally be indicated through waving trees, flying
of lighter objects and rising of dust. Similarly super human power of
gods and goddesses has been suggested through four arms, heads, and
other such embellishments. In this connection Hindu history has much
more to offer to the world as a piece of art and literature.

One of the most remarkable features of Hindu history is that unlike
other faiths, it is not confined to any area and time, but historical
characters have imprints left over the entire universe. There are
several descriptions related to inter-planetary movements of not only
of gods and goddesses, but also of sages and mortal beings. The gods,
goddesses and many of the sages are timeless and ever lasting. They
appear and disappear, are clad in glittering costumes, are powerful
and resourceful to grant boons and can inflict destruction through
curse as well. Every God possesses weapons to destroy the evil, as
well as flowers to shower blessings.

Hindus laid greater importance on the preservation of environment
also. Animals and useful plants such as Peepal, Beil, Tulsi, and
Banyan were associated with various gods and goddesses; to be loved,
nurtured, and even worshiped. Sources of water, mountains and other
elements of nature are also respected as gods and goddesses. Animals
were also included in history thereby recognizing their right to co-
exist with others. Even Pig and snakes, hated in other faiths find a
respectable place in Hindu history, since no one is under rated. Many
animals are associated with Gods as carriers. Some animals were given
the status of Gods and goddesses to impress that Omnipresence of the
Almighty.

Every religion has drawn its own concept of heaven and hell that are
comparable to the prevailing of the religion originated. Islamic
Heaven is cool, shady and has plenty of water sources fruit grow and
nymphs are on duty to serve the believers. There Hell is always
burning hot with lot many apparatus of torture in motion to punish
the non believers and worshipers of idols. On the contrary Biblical
Heaven has Sun shine, and their hell is full of Ice. All the
religions have placed heaven above and Hell below. The administration
of heavenly sites is in the hands of Devas, Angles, Nymphs, Hoors and
Apasras who are well versed in the art of dressing up, dancing and
music. Like wise in Hinduism pious people reside in Swarga and
sinners in Narka irresective of their being believers or non-
believers. The only difference is that Narka residents have chances
of relocating themselves in Swarga with good deeds done when they are
reborn. Propagators of religion not believing in re-birth have no
option of relocating even if they atoned later and desired to do some
good.

Though Hindus believe in one God, but view the same God in three
different modes while in action and that is known as the Trinity of
Supreme God:

Brahm is the Creator God. He is traditionally depicted with four
heads, faces and arms. Each head recites one of the four Vedas. The
hands hold a water-pot used in creating life, a string of rosary
beads used to keep track of the Universe's time, the text of the
Vedas, and a lotus flower. He is the husband of goddess Saraswati.
His mount is Hamsa (Swan). Brahm only occasionally interferes in the
affairs of the gods, and even more rarely in mortal affairs. He is
generally painted old, probably to signify that creativity, wisdom,
and experience without resources and power is like an old and
helpless person.

Vishnu is known as preserver. He is usually depicted as a four-armed
humanoid with blue skin, often sitting or resting on a lotus flower
or relaxing on Sheshnag bed with Lakshami (goddess of wealth) in
attendance, indicating a person possessing everything of ultimate
luxury. His mount is Garuda. He is identified with his Avatars
(Incarnations) to re-establish orderliness in the World.

Shiv is the destroyer. Shiv is represented as immersed in deep
meditation, on Mount Kailash. However, even though he represents
destruction, he is viewed as a positive force, the Destroyer of Evil.
His vahan (mount) is 'Nandi', the Bull. He is usually represented by
the symbol of Shiv ling. His consort is 'Parvati', a goddess who
comes in many different forms, one of whom is Kaali, the goddess of
death. As Nataraj Shiv is the Lord of the Dance, and also symbolizes
the dance of the Universe, with all its delicately balanced heavenly
bodies and natural laws which complement and balance each other. He
is also symbolized as doing his great dance of destruction, called
Taandava signifying praleya -- the doom's day, implying total
dissolution of the universe.

All the three reflections are in fact one God performing three
different functions of creation, preservation and finally destruction
same way as a human can be son to the parents, husband to the wife,
and parent of his children. All the three separate functions are
performed by the same person but the person is viewed differently by
his parents, wife and children. The concept of Trinity wraps in
itself the 'Theory of division of power' that was propounded by
Montesquieu of France, much later. Supreme God is personified into
the Trinity of Brahm Vishnu and Shiv. While Brahm, Vishnu and Shiv
function within their respective areas of creativity, preservation,
and destruction respectively and do not trespass or interfere in to
the field of each other's. They consult each other whenever there is
any crisis in the universe. Thus 'Government of the Universe'
reflects 'division of power' as well as 'interdependence' that
Montesquieu preached to the political thinkers of the west in
ninteenth century.

Hindu supreme Gods are not confined to any geopgraphical place and
period. They neither have any beginning or any ending. They are
universal.

1.7 million throng Hindu shrine in Malaysia

IANS
The Times of India
Monday, February 1, 2010

Kuala Lumpur - Over 1.7 million Hindu devotees on Monday thronged
Lord Subramaniam's temple at the Batu Caves near the national capital
to celebrate the annual Thaipusam festival.

Crowds of devotees and tourists swelled through the night even as the
deity's silver chariot left Batu Caves at 4 p.m. on Sunday for the
Sri Maha Mariamman temple here to mark the end of the festival.

About 10,000 devotees followed the chariot back on foot, New Straits
Times said.

Sri Maha Mariamman Devasthanam works committee chief N. Sivakumar
said the Thaipusam celebration last year lasted for a week, and this
year the temple management was ready to maintain the carnival
atmosphere beyond Monday if necessary.

Going by the enthusiasm of the festival crowd this year, it would not
be a surprise if the number of visitors to the Batu Caves temple
surpassed two million, he added.

Multi-ethnic Malaysia is home to about 1.9 million Indians who
settled here during the British era. A bulk of them are Tamil Hindus,
while there are settlers from other regions and practitioners of
Christianity and Sikhism as well.

Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak with his wife and leading members of
his cabinet were among the visitors this year. He underscored the
need for accommodating the festivals and citizens of different
faiths, although a majority of Malaysians practice Islam.

Idiot nur, I have told you so many times that people living in glass

worshippers when you yourself are worshipping a stone? Correct

Ancient tribal language becomes extinct as last speaker dies

Death of Boa Sr, last person fluent in the Bo language of the Andaman
Islands, breaks link with 65,000-year-old culture

The last speaker of an ancient tribal language has died in the
Andaman Islands, breaking a 65,000-year link to one of the world's
oldest cultures.

Boa Sr, who lived through the 2004 tsunami, the Japanese occupation
and diseases brought by British settlers, was the last native of the
island chain who was fluent in Bo.

Taking its name from a now-extinct tribe, Bo is one of the 10 Great
Andamanese languages, which are thought to date back to pre-Neolithic
human settlement of south-east Asia.

Though the language has been closely studied by researchers of
linguistic history, Boa Sr spent the last few years of her life
unable to converse with anyone in her mother tongue.

Even members of inter-related tribes were unable to comprehend the
repertoire of Bo songs and stories uttered by the woman in her 80s,
who also spoke Hindi and another local language.

"Her loss is not just the loss of the Great Andamanese community, it
is a loss of several disciplines of studies put together, including
anthropology, linguistics, history, psychology, and biology," Narayan
Choudhary, a linguist of Jawaharlal Nehru University who was part of
an Andaman research team, wrote on his webpage. "To me, Boa Sr
epitomised a totality of humanity in all its hues and with a richness
that is not to be found anywhere else."

The Andaman Islands, in the Bay of Bengal, are governed by India. The
indigenous population has steadily collapsed since the island chain
was colonised by British settlers in 1858 and used for most of the
following 100 years as a colonial penal colony.

Tribes on some islands retained their distinct culture by dwelling
deep in the forests and rebuffing would-be colonisers, missionaries
and documentary makers with volleys of arrows. But the last vestiges
of remoteness ended with the construction of trunk roads from the
1970s.

According to the NGO Survival International, the number of Great
Andamanese has declined in the past 150 years from about 5,000 to 52.
Alcoholism is rife among the survivors.

"The Great Andamanese were first massacred, then all but wiped out by
paternalistic policies which left them ravaged by epidemics of
disease, and robbed of their land and independence," said Survival
International's director, Stephen Corry. "With the death of Boa Sr
and the extinction of the Bo language, a unique part of human society
is now just a memory. Boa's loss is a bleak reminder that we must not
allow this to happen to the other tribes of the Andaman Islands."

Boa Sr appears to have been in good health until recently. During the
Indian Ocean tsunami, she reportedly climbed a tree to escape the
waves.

She told linguists afterwards that she had been forewarned. "We were
all there when the earthquake came. The eldest told us the Earth
would part, don't run away or move."

University President re-examines tenure

Thursday, February 4, 2010

It is time that tenures of bogus academics like Prof. Witzel
(Harvard) and Prof. Doniger (Chicago), falsely calling themselves
Sanskritists and experts on Hindu history, should be cut and the
furniture they occupy withdrawn. They are vivid examples of spewing
hate against Hindus and their traditions. (cf. the recent Hindu rage
against Doniger's bogus history of Hindus and Kazanas' open letter to
Witzel establishing the latter's dishonesty).

What do such academics contribute to the advancement of knowledge and
to enthuse the young minds of researchers who are supposed to be
guided by them? They are simply a blot on the academes and such
academics' tenure should be reviewed with a sense of urgency before
USA-India relations sour.

Kudos to Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee for thinking
on the right lines. He should be supported in his efforts to clean up
the academic debris. Will all the Universities of America follow
Gordon Gee's lead?

University president re-examines tenure

Emphasis on research, publishing in job-for-life protection called
outdated

The Associated Press

updated 7:57 p.m. ET Feb. 4, 2010

http://msnbcmedia4.msn.com/j/ap/taking%20on%20tenure--2017404623.hmedium.jpg

Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee thinks it's time to re-
examine tenure, a type of job-for-life protection virtually unknown
outside academia.

Columbus, Ohio - The leader of the country's largest university
thinks it's time to re-examine how professors are awarded tenure, a
type of job-for-life protection virtually unknown outside academia.

Ohio State University President Gordon Gee says the traditional
formula that rewards publishing in scholarly journals over excellence
in teaching and other contributions is outdated and too often favors
the quantity of a professor's output over quality.

"Someone should gain recognition at the university for writing the
great American novel or for discovering the cure for cancer," he told
The Associated Press. "In a very complex world, you can no longer
expect everyone to be great at everything."

Plenty of people have raised the issue over the years, but Gee is one
of the few American college presidents with the reputation and
political prowess -- not to mention the golden touch at fundraising --
who might be able to begin the transformation.

Still, some professors are already skeptical.

"The idea of awarding tenure based on teaching makes me anxious,"
said Jennifer Higginbotham, an English professor at Ohio State who's
up for tenure in three years. By then, she will need to publish a
book she's writing about conceptions of girlhood in the Middle Ages
to have any chance at the promotion.

Good teachers 'dime a dozen'

"There's a feeling, I think, that good teachers are a dime a dozen,"
said Higginbotham, 32. "I'm not sure what you'd have to do to
distinguish yourself enough as a teacher to get tenure."

Tenure, which makes firing and other discipline difficult if not
impossible, can seem ridiculously generous to outsiders. But the job
protection gives professors the freedom to express ideas and conduct
studies without fear of reprisal.

Tenure review, which took its current form in the 1940s, typically
emphasizes publications over teaching and sometimes weighs whether a
professor brings in research grants. Besides job protection, tenure
also figures into salaries. A full professor with tenure at Ohio
State earns about $126,000 annually.

The late Ernest Boyer, a former chancellor of New York's state
university system, raised some of same issues in his groundbreaking
1990 book, "Reconsidering Scholarship."

A few universities have taken steps towards Boyer's model, including
Portland State University and Western Carolina University.

At California State University at Monterey Bay, professors are graded
on their teaching, research, service to the community and service to
the university. Their teaching must be rated at least "commendable" —
the second highest rating.

"We're asking faculty to look at their teaching really as an area of
scholarship, just like they would their research," said Marsha Moroh,
dean of the school's college of science, media arts and technology.

No specifics

Gee is not yet giving specific examples of how a reformed tenure
system would work. In order to make sweeping changes, he would need
cooperation from faculty and administrators across the university
system.

Taking on tenure will be the third big academic undertaking for Gee,
who was hired away from Vanderbilt University in 2007 for his second
stint at Ohio State after a term in the 1990s. Time magazine last
year named him the country's best college president.

The 65-year-old is seemingly omnipresent on campus, striding from
event to event in his trademark bow tie and horn-rimmed glasses at a
pace that exhausts younger aides. He's up daily at 4:30 a.m. to
exercise and stays busy into the evenings, popping into student
parties or attending athletic events.

Gee earlier reorganized Ohio State's arts-and-sciences division and
switched the school from a calendar based on quarters to one arranged
by semester. Both changes ruffled plenty of feathers.

He raised a record $1.2 billion at Vanderbilt and is aiming for a
record $2.5 billion at Ohio State.

Then there's the little matter of keeping tabs on one of the nation's
biggest athletic departments and its outsized football program at a
school with a total statewide enrollment of more than 63,000.

Right time for changes

Gee said a new approach to tenure is needed to ensure the university
stays relevant to students and the outside world. The recession has
helped highlight the importance of higher education to the economy,
he said, so now is the right time to make big changes.

"The universities of the 21st century are going to be the smokestacks
of the century," Gee said, referring to the heavy industry that once
dominated the American economy. "The notion of the large, massive
public university that can exist in isolated splendor is dead."

One challenge is the complexity of big universities, which have
numerous divisions accustomed to doing things their own way. Ohio
State has more than 100 academic units capable of granting tenure.

"In effect, there are a hundred different sets of criteria for
granting promotion or evaluating an individual faculty member's
case," said Tim Gerber, a longtime music professor and chairman of
the university's faculty council.

The pressure to get tenure is also greater as universities rely more
on part-time faculty and non-tenure track professors. While the
number of tenure track positions grew by 7 percent between 1975 and
2007, the number of non-tenure track jobs more than tripled,
according to the American Association of University Professors.

More impact on students

"There are many ways faculty members spend their time that may have
been very important five years ago but may not be as important now,"
said Molly Corbett Broad, president of the American Council on
Education. "Maybe we need to free them up so their time can be
directed in ways that have an impact on students."

Gee is the country's highest-paid public university president with an
annual income of more than $1.5 million, including salary, retirement
and deferred compensation.

His office is crammed with Ohio State memorabilia that includes a
Gordon Gee bobblehead toy, but the first thing that grabs a visitor's
attention is the framed poster of John Belushi from the 1978 college
party film "Animal House."

The next poster to grab the eye is a quotation: "If you don't like
change, you're going to like irrelevance even less."

What a laugh, jay stevens, aka dr. jai etc. cann't decide what he wants

Will the real jay stevens, aka dr. jai etc. stand up. Or is he just a
hypocrite?

I think he is having a real internal struggle to think if he wants to
convert again to his newly found love for his new source of inspiration
and to join those with whom he finds he has much in common .

Leader of Canada's Largest Polygamy Group Has Estimated 25 Wives, 121 Children

Canadian Group Says Polygamy as Moral as Other Lifestyles

By Juju Chang and Linda Owens
ABC News
Friday, February 5, 2010

Winston Blackmore, head of Canada's largest polygamist group, has an
estimated 25 wives plus 121 children. And despite criticism of plural
marriages, the group says polygamy is as moral a lifestyle as any
other, which it's determined to prove to the world.

Blackmore's 11th wife, Zelpha Chatwin, is the mother of his latest
child, Jedediah Mike Blackmore. She defended her fundamentalist
community.

"Having a sister-wife, it's like having the same relationship with
your husband, but it's just two women, or three women or four,
instead of a man and a woman," said Chatwin, who is the mother of
seven children. "I love these girls. & And I couldn't live without
them. I really couldn't."

Chatwin and her extended family will be featured in National
Geographic magazine and on the National Geographic Channel.

"Inside Polygamy" premieres Feb. 10 on the channel. There'll be more
on the story in the magazine's February issue.

The tight-knit polygamous community of Bountiful located near
Creston, British Columbia, faces a unique set of challenges.

Realities of Plural Marriage

Blackmore wouldn't confirm how many wives he has but Chatwin's
sister, Marsha, is his 10th.

The sisters became his wives on the same day. As for plural
marriages, Marsha Chatwin said, there's "definitely jealousy."

Blackmore's second daughter, Mary Roundy, said her particular family
didn't get a lot of time with Blackmore.

"But whenever he'd do things with us, it would be really special,"
she said.

Roundy is making her own life choices within the community that's
estimated at 500 strong.

She's in a monogamous marriage with a man who was also raised in a
polygamous family.

"Even with my father's children, most don't seem particularly
interested in living that lifestyle," she said. "I don't see it dying
out right away. Maybe a few generations. Who knows?"

Until 2001, Blackmore's group followed Warren Jeffs, the "prophet"
and leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day
Saints, or FLDS.

'Prophet' Jailed, Group Renounces Underage Marriages

But Jeffs is now in prison, serving multiple sentences after his
conviction connected to underage marriages, some to girls as young as
12. He is on suicide watch.

Texas Child Protection officials took 439 children into custody from
a ranch run by the FLDS in a 2008 raid, saying underage girls were
being married off to older men and that the sect's boys were being
raised to become sexual predators.

In the largest child custody case in U.S. history, the Texas Supreme
Court ordered hundreds of children from the sect, who had been held
in state custody for a month, to be returned to their parents,
agreeing with a lower-court decision that the state had not proved
that the children were in immediate danger of abuse.

Twelve FLDS men from Texas have been indicted on a variety of sex
charges, including assault and bigamy.

Sect leaders have promised there will be no more underage marriages.

"Inside Polygamy" premieres Feb. 10 on the National Geographic
Channel.

TN temple to have 'Valentine' deity

By Priya M Menon, TNN
The Times of India
Friday, February 5, 2010

Chennai - Greeting cards and red roses are what one usually
associates with Valentine's Day. But couples in love will soon have
something else to look forward to -- a temple where they can seek the
blessings of, who else, Lord Krishna, the symbol of eternal love.

"Lord Krishna is believed to have had about 16,000 wives. Every day
was Valentine's Day for him," says R Jaganaath of the Chennai-based
Gokulalakshmi Trust, which is constructing a Valentine's Shri Krishna
temple at Sholingur in Vellore district, around 90km from Chennai.

The temple, a brainchild of Jaganaath, is expected to be ready by
April-end. "About 60% of the construction is already over," he says.
"People normally associate Valentine's Day with greeting cards, but I
wish to bring the element of devotion also into it. It can be about
Krishna's love for his devotees and their love for the lord."

Jaganaath says that the temple is meant especially for couples in
love. "Any form of love is divine; I am sure the lord will only bless
couples who come here."

Turkish Teen Buried Alive for Talking to Boys

By Terence Neilan, Contributor
AOL News
Friday, February 5, 2010

Honor killings are not something new to many people in Turkey. But
the death of a 16-year-old girl who was buried alive for talking to
boys has been revealed to be a particularly gruesome killing and has
stirred strong reactions.

"The autopsy result is bloodcurdling," an unidentified official told
the Anatolia news agency [1] Thursday, Agence France-Press reported.
"According to our findings, the girl -- who had no bruises on her
body and no sign of narcotics or poison in her blood -- was alive and
fully conscious when she was buried."

The girl's father and grandfather are to be put on trial for burying
her alive, reportedly because they thought her friendship with boys
had brought shame and dishonor to the family.

The body of Medine Memi was found in a sitting position with hands
tied in a 6½-foot hole under a chicken coop at the family house in
Kahta in southeast Turkey. Police discovered the body following a
tip-off 40 days after she went missing, the agency said.

According to a postmortem examination, the agency added, the girl's
lungs and stomach contained significant amounts of soil, confirming
she was alive when she was buried.

The girl had repeatedly tried to tell the police that she had been
beaten by her father and grandfather, the London Times [2] reported
today. "She tried to take refuge at the police station three times,
and she was sent home three times," her mother, Immihan, said after
the body was discovered in December.

The girl's father, the Times added, was reported as saying at the
time, "She has male friends. We are uneasy about that."

Reaction to the killing was particularly strong in remarks posted on
the Web site of a religious television channel, Samanyolu, the London
paper reported.

"The punishment for whosoever should kill with intent is the hell
where he will languish forever," one poster said, adding, "Allah has
cursed him and prepared great pain for him."

Another comment on the site said, "You named your daughter after the
holy city of Medina but your mind is left over from the earlier Age
of Ignorance."

Honor killings are most prevalent in Turkey's predominantly Kurdish
southeast, the Anatolia agency said. But the practice has spread to
cities and even abroad, largely through migration, with cases
reported in the U.S. and U.K.

Our government is encouraging people like this to emmigrate here into
Australia. Do we really need these people here? Do we need another 450,000
immigrants a year? We don't need them, there's not enough water, nor can we
build the roads, houses, schools..

Learning Hindi is good for your brain

By Dinesh C. Sharma
India Today
Thursday, February 4, 2010

Indraprasth aka New Delhi, November 4, 2009 - Learning Hindi has an
advantage over English -- it exercises more areas of the brain
compared to the Queen's language.

In a first-of-its-kind study in the country, scientists have
discovered that reading Hindi involves more areas of human brain than
English.

Scientists at the Manesar-based National Brain Research Centre (NBRC)
have for the first time studied the processing of an Indian script --
Devanagari -- in the human brain using functional Magnetic Resonance
Imaging (fMRI).

In Devanagari, consonants are written in a linear left-to-right order
and vowel signs are positioned above, below or on either side of the
consonants.

As a result, the vowel precedes the consonant in writing certain
words but follows it in speech making it a unique script.

"Our results suggest bilateral activation-participation from both
left and right hemispheres of the brain-for reading phrases in
Devanagari," said Nandini Chatterjee Singh, who led the multi-
disciplinary team of researchers.

The human brain does not have dedicated neurological circuits
specifically meant for reading.

Therefore, reading involves restructuring of the existing neural
architecture or activation of certain areas of the brain depending on
the script one is reading.

English, which uses the Roman script, is alphabetic. That is, it has
vowels and consonants that are written linearly from left to right.
Reading English-and other alphabetic languages-involves activation of
areas in the left hemisphere of the brain.

In contrast, Devanagari has the properties of both alphabetic and
syllabic scripts. Scientists have found reading the language involves
activation of the left and right hemisphere.

The result of the study has recently appeared in journal Current
Science. Researchers used the fMRI technique to record images of a
working brain while reading Hindi. The study was conducted with
individuals who primarily read Devanagari.

"While it is difficult to find in India a population that reads only
Hindi and no English, we could manage to find individuals who
primarily read Hindi and have been doing so for the last 20 years,"
Singh said.

In India, she said, children usually learn to read two scripts (often
English and a regional language) almost simultaneously in school.

"If this is the best way to teach our children still remains to be
determined. What the implications of this are for dyslexia is also
something we are investigating. The practical implications of our
studies will hopefully emerge in the next few years," Singh added.
