No worries. The movies (except 27 Down) that I suggested are
"mainstream," i.e., Bollywood. :-) There are not all that bad - easy
entertainment as you put it.

Pather Panchali would be considered "serious cinema." If I had my
choice, I would definitely go with Pather Panchali, and follow it up
with Satyajit Ray's "Aparajito" and "Apur Sansar." The three make up the
Apu trilogy, and represent the finest of Indian cinema (non-Hindi,
non-Bollywood). The music for the movies was scored by Pandit Ravi
Shankar. There was a brief period in the 70s/80s when good serious
movies were made in Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam, Tamil, and Kannada.

Some part of the narration at the beginning is left unsubtitled. I

For easy entertainment and to get the real feel of Bollywood with all
its colors and entertainment, watch

1. Sangam - mid 60s
2. Padosan - late 60s
3. Jewel Thief - mid 60s
4. Sholay - mid 70s
5. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge - mid 90s

Don't miss 4 and 5 as they are the most successful Bollywood movies
ever.

Nice choices and good entertainment value for the dollar. But Michael's
constraint was that there be no songs in the movie. The narrows the
choices considerably.

The "best" movies were made in black and white in the 50s/early 60s (a
wholly biased opinion from an old fogey :-)) Lots of these movies
actually had plots. Kaaghaz ke Phool and Pyaasa by Guru Dutt were
outstanding movies from that era. Good music and songs too.

Anyways, check out the Bollywood Top25 (nice collection) published by
the Times of India in 2005

Anybody who thinks Bollywood cant match or even surpass Hollywood in
special effects should watch the flood at the Pan Pacific Hotel in
Sinagpore. Will go to see the movie again just for that
The songs are superb especially the paisa (money) one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoAmHayKQjc&feature=fvst
Pity they left out the wet saree one !
Apparently they are going to add it to the movie next week. Mohra ,
that brilliant , also had one of these dances, by Raveena (not the tip
tip rain) but the one with Nasureedin shah deleted but you can see it
on some dvds.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaR04R470hU&feature=related
Didnt see this one either, maybe its played at the end
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjK1xgT6vTk&feature=PlayList&p=41A04C0012C276E7&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=10

Unlike most Bollywood movies , one tends to remain detached
from the antics on the screen. Maybe because there is no moral being
preached and no relative dying. Watch it for the songs and dances and
the flood.

Hi, I know Bollywood is the greatest film producer on the planet today, but
i have only seen one Indian film, Slumdog Millionaire. Do you know if there
are good indian films without singing, a thriller or a comedy. Something
without that weird music. I would like to try one, you see.

Actually songs are the most remembered things about largely forgettable
formulaic Bollywood movies. That said, I cannot think of any more than
two to three movies that did not have songs in them

(1) Ittefaq - from the late 60s/early 70s starring Rajesh Khanna and
Nanda. It was a pretty good suspense movie by Yash Chopra.

(2) Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro - from the late 80s/early 90s Naseeruddin Shah
and Ravi Baswani. Was a good satire about corruption in India, and a
real laugh riot in parts. This movie too did not have any songs

(3) Black - early 2000s starring Rani Mukherji and Amitabh Bachchan had
no more than a couple of songs in it.

(4) 27 Down - early 70s. I'm a bit hazy on the details of this movie. I
remember it had Rakhee Gulzar and Sadhu Meher.

Maybe there are more. However, 1 and 2 will meet your criteria. :-)

Even if the movie has no songs, it will still have a background score,
which might be weird.

Thank you very much! I will see if I can get hold of one of them. Other
titles they reccomend over in rec.art.past-films seem to be Pather Panchali
and saalam Bombey. But i prefer easy entertainment, if possible.

No worries. The movies (except 27 Down) that I suggested are

Pather Panchali would be considered "serious cinema." If I had my

Apu trilogy, and represent the finest of Indian cinema (non-Hindi,
non-Bollywood). The music for the movies was scored by Pandit Ravi
Shankar. There was a brief period in the 70s/80s when good serious
movies were made in Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam, Tamil, and Kannada.

Total bullshit movie! I have not seen any afghan wearing Hijab in USA?
In fact, Afghans are the most westernized among all south eastern
nation when it comes to dress sense and work. All afghan women work !
Most Pakistani women do not work . Indians wear sari's, pajamas,
turbans etc in the west. Not a single afghan can be found wearing any
indian/pakistani clothes. And what the hell was " I ask Abu"... " I
ask Ammi" (indian words) and indian food in typical tiny indian
dishes on the table? Afghan will kill themselves before putting food
in tiny dishes in front of quests. The Afghan family ,next to us
walked out of the hall in the middle of the movie.
If you are basing a character on some nation, at least do some
research!

The point dear Naureen is that its not a movie about
miniskirted Afghans in the west but about Islamic fundamentalists from
that country, who force women to eat separately and not join in the
conversation with men as shown in this movie.
One thing that spoilt it a bit is that Om Puri does not have a
beard as good believers should. Every day I wake up and thank non
existent Almighty god that I was born a Kaffir and will forever stay
that way and enjoy the one short life we have on this beautiful
planet instead of oppressing in the name of a cruel tyrant Almighty
who hasnt got the good sense to leave us alone.

Nope the point is if you were shooting movie inside afghanistan about
afghanistan than beards, head towels can be shown. You should also
know that Talibans were never able to hold any area in afghanistan.
Ifyou are attempting to make a movie than make it look like real.
Cinema is not only for entertainment purpose, it is educational also.
Well, what do you know about art cinema. You like idiotic movies
anyway. Try watching Satya jit, benegal movies. You can also rent slum
dog, a mighty heart (on pakistan), khamosh pani (on pakistan) or
alexander to see how to potray alien cultures to the world.

Excellent movie - will keep you transfixed for three hours.
What Muslims must understand is that they are not a race, but share a
belief system which because it wants to impose its way of life on
others is provoking a strong counter reaction as in this movie and its
time to change over to another belief system.
The most beautiful thing in the Universe is the female face
and figure and yet this belief system glorifies in the uglification of
women -baggy burqas and hijabs. Dont read the next paragraph if you
havent seen the movie.
I liked the way the bombs do go off , there is no last minute
reprieve as in Hollywood, and the carnage shown should make people sit
up and take notice.
It does show how some girls get trapped by fundamentalists
with sweet talk, and there might be a sequel with the baby. All must
see this movie , you will be much much wiser. Wonder if they have
banned it in Pakistan?

Like all good comedies its even more enjoybale the second times and
Kapoor's acting is world class. Just watch him as the Pathan on the

Why do Pathans still get their genders all mixed. 'tu bolti'
instead of 'tu bolta' to a man? And after all these years of exposure
to Hindi/Urdu!!
Its on its way to the first Hindi film to break the Rs100 crore

you should come to houston for great indian art performances if you are get
so impressed with mediocrity.
we have better singers better dancers, better themes and programs in houston
than in most places in india or london.

Just got this news from a Paki net friend (one who hates pisslam)
that LD is going 100% full in (na)Pakistan theateres
and the crowd going bersek to the song "Khanabadosh" (easily the best
song).

After watching the movie Pakistan must be wondering
"hai allah yeh indians itne aage kaise nikal gaye, hum dakkan
sooar kee aulad to kahin ke nahi re".
