Drags a bit in the first half , needed on or two songs and
dances to break up the tension and please remove the irritating piano
from Indian movies.
Second half if good and the Afghan wedding jalebi dance
outstanding. Good to see women dancing without the ugly hijab.
War scenes in the middle east are very thrilling , overall a must see
movie and will I think cross Rs 100crore worldwide

Bachchan, the 72-year-old star of close to 200 Bollywood films, was
the joint-top Indian actor on the list at No 7. He and Salman Khan,
the controversial 49-year-old Mumbai-based megastar who has retained
his popularity despite a recent homicide conviction relating to the
drunken killing of a homeless man, both earned $33.5m. Kumar, the
47-year-old actor and martial artist who has appeared in hundreds of
Hindi-language films, made ninth place with earnings of $32.5m, just
ahead of Transformers star Mark Wahlberg ($32m).

excerpt

http://www.dawn.com/news/1200439/indias-first-talkie-alam-ara-and-jinnahs-role-in-it

India's first talkie 'Alam Ara' and Jinnah's role in it
It was somewhere around 1930 when the idea of Alam Ara took root.
Having seen Universal Pictures' Show Boat (1929) (a "40 per cent
talkie" in his words), at the Excelsior Theatre in Bombay, Imperial
Movietone boss, Ardershir Irani began harbouring thoughts of making
India's first talking and singing picture.

As there was no precedent in India of making a talkie, the odds Irani
faced were huge.

There were no soundproof stages nor technical know-how to make a film
that had sound. Nevertheless, Irani decided to take the challenge head
on. He decided to make a screen version of a popular stage play
written by the doyen of Bombay dramatists, Joseph David, who agreed to
adapt the play for the silver screen. The resulting film was Alam Ara.

Alam Ara is a fantasy set piece around typical royal intrigue with a
lost-and-found subplot thrown in. The story revolves around the King
of Kumarpur and his two wives, Dilbahar and Navbahar, both childless.
A fakir predicts that Navbahar will give birth to a son, which gets
Dilbahar all worked up. She has designs on army chief Adil, but he
spurns her. So Dilbahar has him imprisoned and his pregnant wife
banished.

Adil's wife dies giving birth to a girl, Alam Ara, who is brought up
by nomads. When Alam Ara finds out she is Adil's daughter, she
secretly leaves the nomads' camp and makes her way to the palace to
attempt to free her father out from prison. There she sees the
handsome young prince and the two fall in love.

Irani kept his project a secret. He picked up the basics of sound
recording from an American expert, Wilford Deming, who had come in to
assemble the Tanar recording equipment for Imperial at the
astronomical sum of Rs100 a day.

Filming was done mostly between 1am and 4am in the night as the studio
was close to the railway tracks, and the noise of the trains was
unavoidable during the day.

Search for the cast
Since Alam Ara was a talkie, the casting was of utmost importance. As
it was imperative for actors to know the language, Zubeida got the nod
to play the title role instead of of the studio's top star, Sulochana.
As it turns out, Sulochana was actually an Iraqi Jew whose real name
was Ruby Myers. She was not proficient in Urdu or Hindustani and thus
lost out on the opportunity to be the first talkie heroine of Indian
cinema.

For the hero, Irani had all but fixed on Mehboob Khan, the future
director of classics like Aurat (1940), Anmol Ghadi (1946), Aan (1952)
and Mother India (1957), but then decided to go for a more
commercially viable name. As Alam Ara was a tale that also involved
stunts and fight sequences, Irani thought of casting the biggest stunt
star of silent cinema, Master Vithal, who was called the Douglas
Fairbanks of India.

Master Vithal had graduated to becoming India's top swashbuckling star
after entering the film industry by playing a dancing girl in Kalyan
Khajina (1924). He had since joined Sharada Studio and graduated to
becoming a dashing action hero. In his eagerness to play the lead role
in India's first talkie, he broke his contract with Sharada and signed
on with Irani. Sharada, however, refused to take this lying down and
filed a case against Vithal for breach of contract.

Legal saviour, founder of a nation
Coming to Vithal's legal aid was Bombay's leading legal expert at the
time: Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

Jinnah made a very effective defence of Vithal's right to star in Alam
Ara and ensured that Irani got the hero he wanted for his landmark
film.
habshi@anony.net: Aug 17 06:16PM

This actually is a very good movie once you get past the first
hour and its highly irritating background piano music. It doesnt make
anyone sad unlike Indian instruments , and should be banned in
Bollywood movies.
Some stereotypes of Xtians , drink a lot , get tatooed as
children with crosses and crucifixes , get into bare knuckle fights
and speak in English when they get angry,
Jacqueline Fernandes is amazingly beautiful and hope to see
much more of her.
It really gets going when Kareena does the item dance , and
the next song when the brothers start training is outstanding , and
should have been subtitlied, see links below.
The fights are also beautifully choreographed and this movie
is a must see, will go well over 100 crores worldwide

Sanskrit is the lucky mascot for Ajay Devgn

By Joginder Tuteja
Daily News & Analysis
dnaindia.com
Tuesday, July 28, 2015

As a matter of fact, another major film in Ajay's career,
Omkara, too bears Sanskrit origin, hence turning out to
be quite an uncanny trend in the actor's films.

Mumbai - When it came to finalising the title for Ajay
Devgn's Friday release Drishyam, there wasn't much debate
around leaving it as it is. Though a few other titles
were considered, it was unanimously agreed that the film
would continue to be called so. Here is the reason why.
Not just did Ajay believe that the name had already stuck
in people's mind, it has also turned out to be a trend of
sorts where a Sanskrit title has gone in the favor of his
films.

"First it was Singham, now it is Drishyam and tomorrow it
will be Shivaay. Each of these is a Sanskrit word. Yes,
it has been a coincidence of sorts since Singham as well
as Drishyam are actually remakes and Ajay has basically
acquired the title. However, Shivaay is an entirely new
film and subconsciously turned out to be a Sanskrit word.
Given the fact that Singham as well as Singham Returns
did so well while Drishyam has done well across all
languages that it has been made in so far, Sanskrit is
definitely a lucky mascot for Ajay. Now he is mighty
excited about Shivaay too," informs our source.

As a matter of fact, another major film in Ajay's career,
Omkara, too bears Sanskrit origin, hence turning out to
be quite an uncanny trend in the actor's films.

"Well, I never thought about it that way but yes,
sometimes certain titles so stick and then you wonder why
to change them at all. For Drishyam, there was a brief
discussion around the change of title. However, I did
feel that there was no point doing so because everyone
was anyway calling it as Drishyam remake all this while,"
says Ajay, "Someone suggested if we should have Drishya
as a title but then again it was similar to Drishyam. I
remember people debated massively at the time of Singham
as they felt it was a Sanskrit word and pan-India
audience won't pick it up easily. However, we loved the
tone of it and rest is history. Same holds true for
Drishyam too," says Ajay.

Tell him that even a title like Bahubali has been picked
up well by audience across the country and the film is
breaking records in Hindi circuits as well and he nods in
agreement.

"That's exactly my point of view," he says, "If a film is
good, it will do well even if it does not have a
conventional title to it. The word Drishyam has such a
strong meaning and relevance to the story. We didn't want
to touch it."

Vinod Mankara with a Sanskrit movie

nowrunning.com
Wednesday, July 29, 2015

After 'Ottamandaram', award winning director Vinod
Mankara is getting ready with a Sanskrit project. The
movie titled 'Priyamanasam' depicts the life of Unnayi
Warrier, the 17th century scholar, poet, and playwright,
widely known for his classical "Nalacharitham
Aattakatha".

Television actor Rajesh Hebbar does the lead role of
Unnayi Warrier. Kuchuppudi dancer Pradheeksha Kashi and
Bharatnatyam dancer Meera Sreenarayanan do the female
leads.

Unnayi Warrier's "Nalacharitham Aattakkatha" (Kathakali
play) is based on the incredible romantic saga of Nalan
and Damayanthi of the Mahabharatha. All the characters in
that work of art will be characters in this movie too.

'Priyamanasam' will be the third Sanskrit film in the
history of Indian cinema. The movie is scheduled to be
released in September.

Robert Downey Jr still world's best-paid actor as Bollywood stars

Robert Downey Jr has topped Forbes magazine's annual list of the
highest paid actors for the third year in a row. The Iron Man and
Avengers star made an estimated $80m (£51m) over the past 12 months,
beating out fellow Hollywood behemoths such as Vin Diesel, Bradley
Cooper and Tom Cruise.

However, in a startling development, four out of the top 10 wealthiest
male film stars now hail from outside Hollywood, according to the
latest edition of the annual survey. China's Jackie Chan and Bollywood
stars Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar all finished
ahead of established American actors such as Mark Wahlberg, Leonardo
DiCaprio and Johnny Depp.

Robert Downey Jr and the Avengers: Age of Ultron cast hit back at
superhero movie critics
The surprise results came after the financial magazine featured actors
from international film industry meccas beyond the Hollywood bubble
for the first time ever. The prominence of Asian actors comes as
something of a shock because Chinese and Indian movies rarely feature
on annual lists of the highest-grossing films across the globe. The
most successful Bollywood film of all time, last year's PK, made just
$120m globally, while the highest-grossing Chinese film, this year's
Monster Hunt, boasts $290m. Hollywood's best effort, 2009's Avatar,
scored a staggering $2.78bn.

Downey Jr's $80m earnings were thanks largely to a lucrative
profit-share deal from the $1.39bn success of superhero epic Avengers:
Age of Ultron, and a reported $40m payday for upcoming Marvel film
Captain America: Civil War. "Downey Jr has been able to cut unique,
favourable deals that ensure he is well compensated for his Tony Stark
troubles," Forbes' Natalie Robehmed told The Guardian. "Movies
featuring his Iron Man character still perform astronomically at the
box office."

The Hollywood star earned a full $30m more than second-placed Chan.
The 61-year-old Hong Kong-based martial arts star, who is popular in
the west but an unmatched megastar in east Asia, made his $50m from
highly profitable franchises such as the upcoming historical action
movie Dragon Blade, as well as merchandise tie-ins and a cinema chain
which trades under his name.

Vin Diesel, star of the Fast & Furious movies, landed in third with
earnings of $47m during the period recorded by Forbes (1 June, 2014 to
1 June, 2015) thanks largely to the box office success of the most
recent instalment in the street racing saga. Fuelled by hype
surrounding the death of star Paul Walker, Fast & Furious 7 scored
$1.51bn globally earlier this year.

Robert Downey Jr calls British journalist 'bottom-feeding muckraker'

The top five was rounded out by Bradley Cooper, whose roles in box
office smashes American Sniper and Guardians of the Galaxy last year
helped earn him $41.5m, and Adam Sandler ($41m) who is generally
considered to be a Hollywood star on the wane following a series of
box office bombs but who benefited from a lucrative deal to screen his
next four films exclusively on Netflix.

Sixth place, with $40m, went to Tom Cruise, who remains a high earner
thanks to the box office success of the Mission: Impossible films,
which he also produces.

Depp and DiCaprio, who have both topped Forbes' list in the past,
found themselves pushed outside the top 10 into 12th and 13th
positions with earnings of $30m and $29m respectively, and Robehmed
said it was no surprise that the Hollywood stars had been displaced.

"Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar are Bollywood
legends," she said. "Bollywood movies gross far less at the box
office, with nearly all their money from domestic ticketing. But
movies cover costs by selling satellite rights to TV channels. And
unlike the US, where first dollar gross deals are a thing of the past,
Indian stars continue to earn a cut of each film's ticketing revenue.

"Jackie Chan, meanwhile, has built an empire on brand extensions and
East-West co-productions - helped by his special relationship with the
Chinese government."

The best-remunerated Briton was James Bond star Daniel Craig in 15th,
with earnings of $27m. Forbes' list features only male stars. A
female-only rundown is promised at an unspecified later date.
