Young guns

By Johnson Thomas
The Pioneer
Sunday, July 3, 2011

This has so far been a nightmarish year for the Hindi film industry,
as it has seen most of its big-budget movies biting the dust at the
Box Office. But it is not all bad news. Small-budget films, with new
and young faces, have managed to provide a silver lining for the
ailing industry

Bollywood after Sholay has been about big star-cast films and
skyrocketing budgets. Over the years the revenue from the mainstream
arena has been pitiful with just a small number making it past the
revenue earner stage. Filmmakers like Sanjay Leela Bhansali
(Saawariya, Guzaarish), Ashutosh Gowariker (Khelein Hum Jee Jaan
Sey), Vipul Shah (Action Replayy), Anil Sharma (Veer), Anurag Basu
(Kites), Leena Yadav (Teen Patti), Mani Ratnam (Raavan), Yash Raj
Films (Dil Bole Hadippa, Pyaar Impossible, Lafangey Parindey), Farah
Khan (Tees Maar Khan) and Ram Gopal Varma (Rakht Charitra 2) had to
incur mighty losses.

According to a report released at FICCI-Frames -- the annual conclave
for people working in the entertainment industry -- this year, the
media and entertainment industry registered a 11 per cent growth in
2010, touching close to Rs 652 billion, but Bollywood suffered a net
loss of Rs 300 crore because a majority of its big-budget mega-star
films fell by the wayside. In fact, one estimate says 96 per cent of
films being made have tanked at the Box Office. Experts at the
conference opined that it was time Bollywood focussed on scripts
rather than stars and frills. Even scriptwriter Anjum Rajabali
(Ghulam, The Legend of Bhagat Singh, Raajneeti) made an impassioned
plea, urging the industry to focus on content rather than gloss.

"Though we are the largest film producing industry in India, we still
have complaints about our inability to make the kind of returns we
are expected to make. Week after week, flops, flops and flops litter
the Box Office cinemascape. And in any given year, only a few manage
to strike it rich," observed Rajabali.

The crisis has probably made the industry rethink and even the big
production houses have decided to go for some serious slimming. Some
have even gone a step further and set-up separate divisions to churn
out smaller budget and far more viable films. Last year, with the
economic slowdown playing havoc, the industry had to make a mid-
course correction. So, a majority of the films being released today
are in the budget of Rs 2 crore to Rs 20 crore. More than a dozen of
such movies have already been released in the past six months and
more are set for release, while a larger number is ready to go on
floors.

The result is before us now. The recent release of films like Pyaar
Ka Punchnama, Shaitan, Shor in the City, Dhobi Ghat, Bheja Fry 2,
Stanley Ka Dabba, Ragini MMS, etc, in recent weeks and the previous
good showings of films like Bheja Fry, A Wednesday, Mithya, Phas Gaye
Re Obama, Tere Bin Laden, Band Baaja Baaraat, No One Killed Jessica,
Love Sex Aur Dhokha, Tanu Weds Manu, among others, reaffirmed what
was being believed for some time now: That small-budget, innovative
movies are helping Bollywood survive a string of big-budget flops.
Much is also expected from the Aamir Khan Productions' just released
Delhi Belly, which has some serious competition in Amitabh Bachchan's
Bbuddha Hoga Terra Baap.

A small-budget film does not necessarily guarantee returns though.
Recent releases Teen Thay Bhai and Shagird fared miserably and Onir's
I Am, the first film to try crowd financing for its production, was a
critical success but not a Box Office money spinner. Even Dhobi Ghat,
which managed to get in a tidy initial because of Aamir Khan's
association, did not do brisk business at the Box Office. Trade
analyst Vinod Mirani believes that whatever be the budget of the
film, it's the content and the current audience taste that matter.
"Be it a big or a small-budget film, the audience still has to pay
the same amount of money for a ticket at the multiplex. The multiplex
may have made it easier for smaller players to showcase their films
and garner a spillover audience, but it has also managed to drive
away a certain section of the audience who were once loyal to the big
star-cast films," says Mirani.

Most movies that have done well this year are either small-budget or
the works of new filmmakers. Interestingly, even a new breed of
actors like Rajeev Khandelwal, Rajkumar Yadav, Prateik Babbar, Rajat
Barmecha, Kalki Koechlin and Vinay Pathak has secured a respectable
place in the Hindi film industry. Mirani quips, "But that is because
the big stars and their producers have little to offer in terms of
newness or interesting content. Even the Sippys have failed to make a
mark in the relatively small-budget bracket. Dum Maaro Dum might have
had a reasonable run in certain sectors with urban multiplexes, but
it failed to spark interest in the rest of India. At best, it may
just about manage to break even."

Many big-budget filmmakers have reversed their views and are now
thinking small-budget. So, in the coming years, audiences will find
less big-budget films releasing, with immense concentration on
"strong content and an intense storyline", said Karan Johar, director
and CEO of Dharma Productions, at the FICCI conclave.

Dharma's relatively low-budget Wake Up Sid did reasonably well at the
Box Office last year and there are few more waiting to hit the
theatres soon.

Film commentator Meenakshi Shedde has a different take on the issue.
"Small-budget films have always gone hand-in-hand with big-budget
ones from as early as the 1960s and 1970s. So, this is not a new
phenomenon by any yardstick. It's just that multiplexes have changed
viewing habits of the audience who are now looking for quick fixes
and do not have the patience to wait in long serpentine queues for a
ticket of their favourite star's film," she says.

This, Shedde feels, has provided a greater opportunity to young
filmmakers to showcase their craft. People like Anurag Kashyap,
Vishal Bhardwaj, Sagar Ballary, Rajat Kapoor, Vikramaditya Motwane,
Abhishek Chaubey and Anusha Rizvi have played a major role in
redefining audience tastes by making films that allow the starved
audience to wear their thinking caps while watching a film.

Subhash Ghai's Mukta Arts is a listed company and is answerable to
shareholders. Even he has forayed into the small-budget bracket with
Kashmakash and Cycle Kick. Opines Shedde, "Today, most production
houses are adopting a portfolio approach to movie-making. So, they
are into making all kinds of movies -- small, medium and big-budget.
In this way they can cut down on costs and garner a higher profit
margin."

Most filmmakers today, especially the younger lot, prefer to play
safe. Anywhere between Rs 1 crore and Rs 10 crore seems to have
become a viable margin for production houses and independent
filmmakers. Many of these films have a set target audience, mainly
residing in metros and some are even making films for the NRI
audience. Pritish Nandy Communications (Mr and Mrs Iyer, Chameli) set
the trend initially. Thereafter, others like Metalight Productions,
Viacom18, UTV Spotboy, Channel Nine Entertainment, Percept Picture
Company and Yash Raj have achieved greater successes with their small
and medium-budget films.

Senior film critic Vijay Vashisht, however, believes that stars and
big-budgets still matter to the audience. "Stars have always been
important and will always be. Be it those in the yesteryears like
Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand or Raj Kapoor and those of today, like Shah
Rukh Khan (My Name is Khan), Salman Khan (Dabangg, Ready), Aamir Khan
(Ghajini, 3 Idiots) and Amitabh Bachchan (Black and Paa), they all
have a solid standing in the industry and will continue to do so
provided they remain flexible and try to reinvent themselves to suit
the changing times."

It's the same flexibility, along with Aamir's new-age promotion
tactics and marketing strategies, that has made the Aamir Khan
Productions a formidable force in the entertainment industry. Aamir
has not only evolved as an actor, but also managed to strategise the
marketing of his films with great intuitive efficacy. It has always
been a grouse with his directors that Aamir interferes too much on
the sets. And any product with Aamir in it had to have his stamp of
approval. Shedde says, "Aamir is a risk-taker as a producer and an
actor. Be it Lagaan, Ghajini, Taare Zameen Par, 3 Idiots, Dhobi Ghat,
Delhi Belly or any of his forthcoming releases, he has given 100 per
cent both in the pre-production as well as the post-production
stage."

It is well-known that during the pre-release publicity drive of 3
Idiots, Aamir travelled across the country to uniquely promote the
film. Even Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the producer of the film, admitted
jokingly: "I don't know what I have got myself into. Aamir just calls
from wherever he is promoting the film and says we need this, this
and that, and I oblige. I don't know whether I'll go bankrupt with
this film or end up making money." It's another matter that the film
went on to become the top-most grosser of all time.

Indulgent promotions have begun to signify a thriving business model
for films of varying budgets. For Taare Zameen Par, Aamir went all-
out to promote the cause of dyslexia, and the results were there for
all to see. The Ghajini hair cut and the eight-pack abs are also
well-remembered tricks that he employed to promote the film. Even for
Dhobi Ghat, his wife Kiran Rao's directorial debut venture, Aamir
took the festival route, garnered critical acclaim and only then did
he start promotions in India. He even managed to garner a fair amount
of buzz before the film's release which gave it a good initial.

For his nephew, Imran Khan, Aamir gifted Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na and
most recent release Delhi Belly. For both the films he has been
unstinting in adopting marketing gimmicks and promotions. Jaane Tu...
made Imran a star. Now it remains to be seen whether Maamu jaan can
tread the same path with Delhi Belly.

Perhaps Ajmer Haja Sharif is built over a demolished Shiv Temple and
the temple continues to function on a side, that might attract Hindu-
s. But wearing a headgear and walking into the Mazar of Muslims is
more of a Political move than real inner urge to pray, esp. Big B or
others in Bollywood or Politicians.

Dargarh worship has no place in Islam. Dargarh means idol worship.
Muslims visiting Dargarh -- whether in Ajmer or Haji Ali -- are idol
worshippers. Saudi Arabia has demolished many places -- even
Mohammeds' house -- which resembled idol worship. Hindus must tell
those Muslims who visit Dargarhs that they have become Hindus, and
thus demoralise them.

Nepal censors 'Delhi Belly'

PTI
The Pioneer
Tuesday, July 5, 2011

Kathmandu - Aamir Khan's latest production 'Delhi Belly', an
expletive-laden adult comedy, has been banned from screening by the
government here barely two days after its release.

The movie has run into trouble with the censor board, which found
certain scenes and dialogues objectionable, but the distributors were
reluctant to make any changes in the film.

The Home Ministry on Sunday issued order to halt screening of the
film and also seized the print of the film along with equipments,
according to Superintendent of Police Kedar Rijal, chief of Kathmandu
District Police Office.

"Delhi Belly contains some obscene scene and dialogue which need to
be removed before screening," said Ganesh Bhandari chairman of Nepal
Film Development Corporation.

The Censor Board under the ministry of information and communication
issued the order to remove some "objectionable scenes" and audio of
the film before screening but the distributors did not comply.

"The government had ordered to halt the screening of the film as the
distributors violated the norms and screened it with all the obscene
dialogue and scene," Bhandari added.

It is not the first time that a Bollywood release has faced troubled
in Nepal. In 2009, the screening of Akshay Kumar-starrer Chandni
Chowk to China over claims that Buddha was born in India. Similarly,
in 2000, Hrithik Roshan's Mission Kashmir faced a ban in Nepal after
newspapers attributed some anti-Nepal sentiments to Hrithik Roshan.
