Piyush's chuk chuk gaadi enchants Cannes

Indraprasth aka New Delhi - You do not expect a man who has won more
than 30 Gold Lion awards at Cannes to be excited about laying his
hands on another one. But adman Piyush Pandey cannot hide the rush of
blood.

Just a few hours after winning the Gold Lion for the first time in
the Film Craft category for Train, created for the Indian Railways,
he says, "The story won because it had its heart in its place. It had
simple emotions and I am an emotional person."

The final night of the Cannes Lions International Festival of
Creativity concluded with the Film, Film Craft, Creative
Effectiveness and Titanium and Integrated Lions Awards going to
Indian agencies. But it is the golden honour for the evergreen motif
of India, the Railways, that had the executive chairman and creative
director for O&M India and South Asia all fired up.

The advertisement, taglined Magic of India -- Indian Railways in
English and Desh Ka Mail -- Bhartiya Rail in Hindi, shows common
people linking hands to form a human train and snaking their way
through the streets of India pretending a return to innocence. They
move to the tune of probably one of Bollywood's oldest desi rap acts,
Railgaadi chuk chuk, by Ashok Kumar.

Talking to The Pioneer from Cannes, Pandey recalls how Railway Board
chairman Vivek Sahai asked him to make an ad film in two weeks, just
in time for the Commonwealth Games, to show the Railways' connect
with the people and embodying the pulse of India.

A couple of brainstorming sessions later, Pandey and his team figured
out the essence of the campaign. "The Railways is such an integral
part of our lives that it speaks the language of a leader. It is a
people's transport, the nerves and veins of our country. It is
perhaps our biggest brand," he said.

"So, we decided to make the film on the premise of its vastness and
uniting and leading people in the process. It's an honest attempt to
show how the Railways links hearts and places together and has been a
pillar of national integration for the past 100 years," Pandey added.

Now the team faced the all important task of choosing a location for
the shoot. After considering many places, they zeroed in on Kolkata.

"It is a city where things fall into place on their own, just like
India itself. We wanted to lend a very homely, warm feeling to the ad
and Prakash Varma, our director, recommended Kolkata's lanes and
bylanes that are ancient, time-tested, a smorgasbord of life, yet
very Indian.

We shot on a very hot day -- the temperature was way beyond the 45
degree mark. Yet we carried on and managed the schedule on time."

Pandey says the song 'Railgaadi' was on the creative team's mind from
the drawing board stage. But the most interesting part was tweaking
the original song, after procuring the rights. "It took us a long
time to get as close as we could to the original. Taufiq gave the
music and produced all the sounds that a train emits on his own.
Sudesh Bhonsle sang and like the Railways, everything blended
effortlessly," said the ace adman.

Ogilvy Delhi executive creative director Ajay Gahlaut had said during
the launch, "Nothing compares to the romance and excitement of
trains. That is what made us line up one behind the other and pretend
to be a train when we were kids. And that was the magic and
simplicity of Piyush's script, brought to life brilliantly by
Prakash's execution."

"This was the fastest I have seen a script translated into a finished
film. A tribute to a great client and a great brand," he added.
