Rahat Fateh Ali Khan taken into custody

IANS

Monday, February 14, 2011

Indraprasth aka New Delhi - Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was
Monday arrested by India's Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI),
a day after he was detained at the international airport here on
charges of carrying undisclosed foreign currency, an official said.

"He has been arrested and will be produced in court," an official of
DRI said.

Khan was being questioned by India's Directorate of Revenue
Intelligence (DRI) for the second day, a day after he was detained at
the international airport on charges of carrying undisclosed foreign
currency, an official said.

"He is still being questioned and senior officials from the Pakistan
High Commission have already visited our office," an official of DRI
said earlier in the day.

Rahat was detained at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport
Sunday on his way back to Pakistan after attending concerts and award
functions in India. More than $100,000 were recovered from the 15-
member troupe.

According to the official, senior DRI officials questioned the
popular singer till late last night but have not charged him yet.

Rahat, the nephew of legendary singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, is
popular both in India and Pakistan. Several of his hit songs from
Indian films are a rage on both sides of the border, for which he has
won several awards, including the recent Filmfare award for "Dil to
Bacha Hai Jee". He was also a judge on the Indian music reality show
"Chhote Ustad".

Pakistan has initiated hectic efforts to secure the release of
singer. Pakistani Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir called Indian High
Commissioner in Islamabad Sharat Sabarwal and discussed the matter
around midnight Sunday. He requested the Indian envoy to ensure that
"no official should misbehave with Rahat during interrogation".

DRI detains Rahat with undeclared $1.24 lakh at IGIA

By a Staff Reporter

Indraprasth aka New Delhi - Renowned sufi singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan
was detained at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on Sunday
evening, and later taken into custody, for allegedly possessing an
undeclared huge amount of foreign currency.

Besides Rahat, two other persons, including an event manager, too
were detained by the Revenue Intelligence sleuths for carrying
undeclared foreign currency of $1.24 lakh. According to sources,
Direct-orate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials have taken Rahat
into custody and are questioning him and his two partners.

The singer arrived at IGI Airport on Sunday on a flight from Karachi
and was intercepted by a special team of DRI personnel, official
sources said.

Rahat was in possession of $24,000 while his other two partners were
having $50,000 each. They had not declared about the money they
possessed to the immigration authorities.

According to official sources, a person on air transit can carry only
$5,000, to carry amount beyond that one has to take permission from
the authorities.

According to sources, Rahat and the other two persons claimed that
the foreign currency which they were carrying was the payment of
their shows.

"The DRI officers are ascertaining the real source of the money and
whether the singer was carrying valid documents or not," official
sources added. Custom officials, Delhi Police, CISF personnel,
however, said that they were not informed about the DRI operation
beforehand and they do not know anything about the detention of the
singer and his aides.

The 37-year-old nephew of Pakistani singing legend Ustad Nusrat Fateh
Ali Khan was earlier too involved in a controversy when organisers of
a concert in Gurgaon filed a police complaint against him in July
last year for his failure to turn up for a show. Rahat has several
hit numbers to his credit and has won the Filmfare Award for Best
Male Playback Singer this year for Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji from the
movie Ishqiya.

He has toured extensively and performed in various parts of the
world. Rahat was last heard in Bollywood film Yamla Pagla Deewana,
which starred Dharmendra, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol.

Pak in frantic efforts to secure release

Islamabad - Pakistan has initiated hectic efforts to secure the
release of famous singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan detained at New Delhi's
Indira Gandhi International Airport on charges of carrying
undisclosed foreign currency.

Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir called Indian High Commissioner in
Islamabad Sharat Sabarwal and discussed the matter around midnight
Sunday. He requested the Indian envoy to ensure that "no official
should misbehave with Rahat during interrogation".

Rahat was detained at the Delhi airport Sunday on his way back to
Pakistan after attending concerts and award functions in India. More
than $100,000 were recovered from the 15-member troupe.

After over six hours of interrogation by customs officials, he was
formally arrested and would be presented in a court Monday morning,
Dunya News reported.

Bashir also called up Pakistani High Commissioner to India Shahid
Malik and directed him to "take immediate steps for securing release
of Rahat".

"The matter should be taken up formally with Indian foreign office,"
he said, adding that "contact with Indian authorities for updates in
the case must be maintained throughout".

Earlier, Interior Minister Rehman Malik called Shahid Malik and
directed him "to provide necessary legal and other consular help to
Rahat".

"Regular updates should be given to authorities in Pakistan regarding
efforts to resolve the case," he stressed.

Rahat's brother-in-law, Asim Raza, told Dunya TV that they "received
information from the media and were feeling concerned about it". "We
are yet to establish any proper contact with the authorities in India
although Rahat talked briefly with his wife and asked her to remain
hopeful of a positive outcome".

Rahat, the nephew of legendary singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, is
popular both in India and Pakistan. Several of his hit songs from
Indian films are a rage on both sides of the border, for which he has
won several awards, including the recent Filmfare award for "Dil to

Custom officials detained him for the specific purpose and will
release if they received procedural satisfactory reply from him for
possessing of one lakh dollar currency. Recently Home minister P
Chidambaram told while addressing high profile meeting attended by
all state chief minister/home minister that major concern is internal
security. If a noted signer carrying such huge amount of foreign
currency would certainly put our officials in perplex situation and
required detailed interrogation . . .

Rahat freed, but asked to stay in India pending probe

IANS

Indraprasth aka New Delhi - A day after Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh
Ali Khan was detained at the Delhi airport on charges of carrying
undisclosed foreign currency of over $100,000, he was freed on
Monday, but has been asked to stay in the country pending a probe
into the source of the money.

Rahat, along with two of his colleagues Maroof and event manager
Chitresh Shirivastava, has been asked to appear before the
Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DIR) Feb 17, informed sources
said.

The three were asked by the DRI to surrender their passports and
appear again for questioning in three days.

Rahat was released after an assurance by the Pakistan high commission
that he will cooperate with the probe, the sources added. He has been
told not to leave the country.

"We are only questioning him. We will be shortly taking a decision,"
Vijaylakshmi Sharma, director-general of the DRI, told reporters when
asked about the outcome of the interrogation.

Rahat was detained at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport
Sunday on his way back to Pakistan after attending concerts and award
functions in India.

"The DRI officers found altogether $124,000, which is equivalent to
about Rs.60 lakh. $24,000 were found from the baggage carried by
Rahat while the remaining $50,000 each were found from the baggage of
two troupe members," Central Board of Excise and Customs chairman S.
Dutt Majumdar said.

Majumadar added that there were "clear violations of excise laws" and
the currency carried by them was "much above" the allowed limit.

According to norms, no one can carry beyond $5,000 in cash and $5,000
in other instruments. The person has to declare to the Customs
Department if he is carrying more than this amount.

Islamabad started working up diplomatic channels to free Rahat Ali
after he was detained Sunday night.

Government sources in New Delhi Monday said India's external affairs
ministry has been in touch with Pakistan's Foreign Office over the
issue.

Three officials from Pakistan's high commission in New Delhi came to
zonal headquarters of the DRI where the singer was interrogated, but
left after about 30 minutes, the sources said.

Pakistan's Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir called India's High
Commissioner Sharat Sabharwal in Islamabad and discussed the matter
around midnight Sunday. He requested the Indian envoy to ensure that
"no official should misbehave with Rahat during interrogation".

Bashir also called up Pakistan's High Commissioner to India Shahid
Malik and directed him to "take immediate steps for securing release
of Rahat".

"The matter should be taken up formally with the Indian foreign
office," he said, adding that "contact with Indian authorities for
updates in the case must be maintained throughout".

Malik spoke with Vivek Katju, Secretary (West) in India's external
affairs ministry, insisting that the protective custody of the singer
be lifted, Pakistan's state-run APP news agency quoted a statement
from the Pakistan Foreign Office as saying.

Earlier, Pakistan's Interior Minister Rehman Malik called Shahid
Malik and directed him "to provide necessary legal and other consular
help to Rahat".

Rahat's brother-in-law, Asim Raza, told Dunya TV that they "received
information from the media and were feeling concerned about it". "We
are yet to establish any proper contact with the authorities in India
although Rahat talked briefly with his wife and asked her to remain

Small Rahat, but no Fateh yet

By a Staff Reporter

Indraprasth aka New Delhi - Renowned Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali
Khan, detained in the Capital for carrying undisclosed foreign
currency, has been directed not to leave India and his passport has
been confiscated. While allowing the singer to leave its custody,
Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), which questioned Rahat
extensively on Monday, asked him to appear before it again on
February 17.

According to sources, DRI sleuths quizzed him regarding $1.24 lakh
that he, along with his troupe members, was carrying at the time of
his detention at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Sunday
evening. Rahat was on in his way to Lahore via Dubai by Emirates
flight EK 517.

Sources said Rahat was formally detained at the airport for more than
eight hours before being taken to a nearby hotel at 1.50 am. Later in
the day, he was reportedly taken to the DRI headquarters at CGO
Complex for further questioning.

Meanwhile, agency reports from Mumbai said the DRI carried out
searches at an event management company in connection with the
seizure of foreign currency. The DRI officials searched the premises
of Eyeline Telefilm and Events', owned by Chitresh Shrivastava,
elder brother of Bollywood singer Aadesh Shrivastava. Sources claimed
that the sleuths found Rs 51 lakh in cash which was seized besides
some documents that could be helpful in the probe being carried out
by the DRI. Efforts to contact Aadesh did not fructify while another
brother of his, Vishal Shrivastava disconnected the phone call.
Sources said questioning of Chitresh, who was also detained on
Sunday, was also being carried out on the alleged cash seizure made
from his Mumbai premises.

On the other hand, the Pakistan High Commission officials on Monday
visited the DRI zonal office where the Sufi singer was detained. The
three officials left after spending about 30 minutes at the DRI
office, sources said. It was not immediately clear whether they had
come to get access to the singer or meet DRI officials.

Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) Chairman S Dutt Majumdar
clarified, prima facie there are clear violations of excise laws and
the singer and his troupe were interrogated.

He said the amount that they were carrying was much above' the
allowed limit.

"The DRI officers found altogether $1.24 lakh which is equivalent to
about Rs 60 lakhs. $24,000 were found from the baggage carried by
Rahat, while the remaining $50,000 each were found from the baggage
of two troupe members," Majumdar said. Notably, the recovered foreign
currency included $10,000 and $8,600 in demand drafts, sources said.
Rahat was intercepted by DRI personnel around 4pm acting on some
prior information.

As per norms, a foreign national cannot carry beyond $5,000 in cash
and $5,000 in other instruments. The person has to declare the amount
if he is carrying more than the bar to the Customs Department.
According to sources, the payments by an event manager to Rahat were
made in Indian currency and US dollars and these people were
allegedly found converting the dollars to Indian rupees through
unauthorised channels.

Rahat (37) and his entire troupe, numbering around 16, including his
manager Maroof and event manager were detained. A nephew of Pakistani
singing legend Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Rahat is a top Bollywood
playback singer and has several hit numbers to his credit. He
recently won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer this
year for Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji from the movie Ishqiya.

Loved every minute of it . The music with its Punjabi beat
especially the wedding song and the Patiala House one at the end is
outstanding and makes the heat skip many beats.
The dialogue is thought provoking eg ' My mother can hear me
without my having to say anything' . Rishi Kapoor as the tyraniccal
lord of the house is magnificient . He does need gastric banding but
just look at him when he was young , singing this song with the girl
who plays his wife here ' Us two locked in a room and the key is lost'

In real life Dimple is the mother in law of the hero Akshay , here
she plays his mother
Anushka Sharma as the sassy girlfriend is just perfect, and looks
really beautiful when she puts on Indian dresses.
I thought they might show the hero playing against India but you
can discover for yourself. They must have paid a fortune to the 50
real life cricketers including Andrew Symmonds shown here.

The background music during the cricket matches is also terrific.
The movie starts with a great song and then slows down a bit , but the
second half is very enjoyable. Hard Kaur a real life very popular
British Indian rapper is also in this movie playing one of the
sisters.
You can see her here

and

It was fun watching Southall scenes , glassy junction pub which
accepts rupees , himalaya cinema , and of course the action is filmed
at Trent Bridge in Nottingham but it doesnt actually say so in the
movie.

Dont miss it . Will be off to see it again. Of course its a bit
over the top and things like the whole England cricket team being
fired after a series of bad performances , being thrashed in the one
days series in Australia !, is a bit over the top , but who wants
realism in movies ?. We want a bit of fun and entertainment and you do
get your money's worth
Great final song

Agora - Movie depicting Christian terrorism

Monday, February 14, 2011

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbuEhwselE0

While not completely true to history it does depict what Christians
inflicted on the Greco-Romans and Jews once they gained power.

We need more movies like this promoting the truth about this vile
cult.

Has this movie been released in any Indian theatres?
