Indian movie on post-7/7 Islamophobia blames Hindu partition
refugees; Director says Sharmila Tagore (Begum Ayesha Sultana)
symbolises secularism in real life

Love in the time of terror

Director's cut: Sharmila Tagore and Soha Ali Khan come together for
the first time

Interview - Sangeeta Datta, Filmmaker

By Rabi Banerjee
The Week

Sangeeta Datta's first film as director, Life Goes On, is star-
studded. Sharmila Tagore and her daughter Soha Ali Khan play mother
and daughter for the first time in the film, which also features
Girish Karnad and Om Puri. Based on her experience in London post
7/7, Datta addresses Islam phobia that the city grappled with at that
time. Two songs of Rabindranath Tagore translated into Hindi by Javed
Akhtar find place in the film. Excerpts from an interview with the
London-based writer, who was associate director of Antarmahal, Last
Lear, Rain Coat and Chokher Bali:

For a debutante filmmaker you have an impressive cast.

I have very good relations with each of them. I have known Sharmiladi
for a very long time now. I was part of the film movement in Mumbai
when I stayed there as an English and film studies professor. So I
knew Girish Karnad and Javed Akhtar. I have worked with Javedji
before.

Why did you make an English movie, though your characters are Indian?

I want the diaspora in Britain to see the movie. I wanted to address
the issue of Islam phobia, which many South Asians like me were
victims of in the aftermath of 7/7. Every woman wearing salwar kameez
was looked at with suspicion. However, not all the characters in my
movie are Indian; there are six British characters in the film.

Tells us about Life Goes On.

The movie is based on the life and anxiety of a family in London
after the 7/7 terror attack. Londoners were suspicious of South
Asians. We had a terrible time. I was greatly influenced by
Shakespeare's King Lear, which explores a father's relation with his
three daughters. Life Goes On is a story about prejudice, death and
loss in a family in London. The character Sanjay Banerjee, played by
Karnad, reinvents his relationships with his daughters after the
death of his wife, Manju, played by Sharmila. The issue of secularism
comes into the film after Manju's death. Sanjay loses his temper when
his youngest and favourite daughter, Dia (Soha), admits to having an
affair with a Muslim boy. His anger stems from the suffering he had
to face during Partition.

Why was Sharmila Tagore your choice as Manju?

I was searching for somebody who symbolised secularism in real life.
Sharmiladi is married to Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. She used to be my
favourite actress when I was in school and college. Her performance
in films like Kashmir ki Kali and Amar Prem were simply great. When
I drew up the character, Sharmiladi became my obvious choice.

Why did you choose Sharmila Tagore and Soha Ali Khan to play mother
and daughter?

Why not? Sharmiladi and Soha have not acted as mother and daughter
before. I am happy that it began with my movie. Both of them played
their characters well.

You are the first filmmaker to use Rabindra sangeet in Hindi.

It was a splendid experience, honestly. Javedji translated two songs
-- Sakhi bahabona kahare bole and Tobu mone rekho -- into Hindi. Both
songs are lip-synced by Sharmiladi, who is portrayed as an artistic
woman.

But does Javed Akhtar know Bengali?

I translated the songs to English for Javedji who then translated it
into Hindi. The ultimate work is wonderful. These two songs added
flavour to the movie. I wanted to use the songs in Hindi as the
larger audience in India should understand. Tagore's poetry is also
used in the movie several times.
