I know Ghandi wasn't much on untouchables, but something about all
that jiggling "allure" harkens, as well, to a close-knit Indian
hegemony which disseminates specific culturally established values as
a prerequisite to evocative notions within such overtures romantic

Asha strikes false note with 'Machhar Raj'

By T. N. Raghunathan
The Pioneer
Thursday, August 5, 2010

Mumbai - Veteran singer Asha Bhosale may have repeatedly clarified
her "Machhar Raj..." Twitter comment but Maharashtra Navnirman Sena
(MNS) chief Raj Thackeray has become the butt of jokes, that too at a
time when he is already under severe flak from various quarters for
his unsavoury comments blaming migrants for the outbreak of malaria.

A day after she clarified several times that her Twitter comment was
not directed against the MNS chief, senior Congress minister Narayan
Rane's son Nitesh Rane made the most of the "Machhar Raj..."
controversy to take a dig at Shiv Sena's executive president Uddhav
Thackeray.

Nitesh, whose father was an erstwhile Shiv Sena leader and a close
associate of both Raj and Uddhav in the not-so-distant past, tweeted
on Wednesday morning, "Machhar Raj is anytime better than Uddhav
Raj!!". Nitesh's earlier comment on his Twitter page was: "Wonder
when the malaria bug will bite the Thackareys as they seem to be the
'spread malaria' brand ambassadors!!"

Nitesh, president of Swabh-imaan Sangathana, has taken on the Shiv
Sena-led Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for its
"incompetence" in fighting the spread of malaria.

Nitesh rooted for the Sena-BJP alliance bowing out of the office in
Asia's biggest civic body. "The Shiv Sena-BJP combine has no right to
remain in power in the BMC if it cannot attend to the basic problems
of Mumbaikars," he said.

Not usually known for raking up controversies, Asha Bhosale
unwittingly stirred hornet's nest at 11.49 am on Tuesday, by
tweeting: "Machhar" Raj...". Four minutes later, she clarified in
another tweet, "I meant too many buzzing around and flying around..."
Having realised that her first comment might lead to a controversy,
she tweeted four minutes later once again, saying, "I was not
referring to Raj Thackeray".

By then, she had already triggered a controversy. No wonder that the
whole of her Tuesday afternoon went in clarifying her first Twitter
comment.

On his part, Raj has chosen to remain silent. Nor has the MNS has
officially reacted.

When contacted, MNS general secretary and Raj's close aide Shirish
Parkar said on Wednesday, "Since she has herself clarified that her
tweet was not against the MNS chief, we have nothing to say in the
matter."

Was having a chat at home with my Dad when we ended up disagreeing
regarding the beginning and ending of "Mahal"- the 1949 Ashok Kumar,
Madhubala one. Since I saw the film more than 20 years ago and my
father much earlier than that, I thought i would check it out with
some of you here.

My memory says that the movie begins with it being a stormy night with
a background voice stating that this story relates to a long time ago
(i some how remember it saying 30 years ago) and Ashok Kumar reaching
the "daak bangla" in the middle of the night with the clock striking
(one?)...the whole story then unfolds with him seeing his own
portrait, the entire madhubala angle, etc. The movie ends with Ashok
Kumar being released from jail and realizing that Madhubala has
already married his friend. If i remember correctly, there is a
dialogue about "agle janam me milan" and Madhubala walks out with
Ashok Kumar sitting on a chair and the movie ends there.

My father agrees with all this but he insists there are 2 additional
scenes - one at the beginning and one at the end. He says that the
movie starts with Ashok Kumar and Madhubala, as husband and wife,
arriving at a railway station on a stormy night and a "taangewala"
takes them as passengers. The "taangewala" tells them a story of a
similar stormy night many years ago in the same area- cut to a
flashback with Ashok Kumar reaching the "daak bangla"...and the rest
of the story as above. At the end, once Madhubala walks out and the
camera pans away from Ashok Kumar on the chair, rather than the movie
ending it comes back to the present. The "tangewala" says that nobody
had heard of the 2 of them ever again...and by now they reach the
destination, which is a daak bangla-clearly the same one . Ashok Kumar
and Madhubala get off the "tanga" and as they enter the daak bangla
the clock strikes (one?)...and the movie ends there.

Now, i must admit that my Dad's version has a certain appeal which
makes the story much more interesting but I am fairly sure that this
is not what i have seen. Were there 2 versions of the story? Or did DD
just edit out the beginning and the ending in the version i saw. Or is
my father just making this up? Is there anyone who has seen this film
many many years ago and remembers it from then. Any clarity is
appreciated

regards
Sancho

I believe that your dad's version fits Achhut Kanya. He is mis-
remembering.

A Bollywood theme park is due to open in Gurgaon, in the northern
Indian state of Haryana.

It is the first live entertainment complex on the scale of Disneyland
(but minus the rides) to open in India.

The park's owners are aiming to offer a taste of the whole of India in
one place, cashing in on the interest both at home and internationally
in the Bollywood phenomena.

The BBC's Shilpa Kannan got a sneak peek.
