Slumdog runs into controversy over song credit

Mumbai - The odds are in its favour at the Oscars to be
announced on February 22, but Danny Boyle's Slumdog
Millionaire also has a raging controversy dogging it.

The song 'Darshan Do Ghanshyam Nath Mori' sung by a blind
beggar in the film is credited to 15th century poet Surdas
on the show, Who Wants To Be a Millionaire. But, according
to N S Nepali, the son of late poet-lyricist Gopal Singh
Nepali, the original song was written by his father for the
1957 film Narsi Bhagat.

Nepali, who saw Slumdog at a theatre in Mumbai a few days
ago, says he is distraught at the makers of Slumdog for
"overlooking this fact". "Even in the options to the
question 'Who wrote the song 'Darshan do", the film shows
the names: Surdas, Tulsidas, Mirabai or Kabir," says
Nepali. "They have not given my father's name as one of the
options. I'm devastated."

Nepali says his father, who was one of the renowned poets
of the 50s, died in 1964. "And it is great disservice to
his name that he misses out on the credit for a song that
he and music director Ravi made famous."

Nepali admits that Surdas has over 1,500 poems to his name,
but, he says, 'Darshan do Ghanshyam' was definitely not one
of them. "Another song, 'Ankhiya hari darshan ko pyasi',
written by Surdas, also expresses a similar sentiment and
this is the song that should have been featured. But
Slumdog clearly mentions 'Darshan do', which is a song from
the film Narsi Bhagat.

"My father didn't go to temples. Though he may have been
inspired by spiritual writings of several poets and
writers, this song is definitely an original piece of
work," says Nepali.

Avid music collector Amod Mehra agrees that 'Darshan do'
sung by Hemant Kumar, Sudha Malhotra and Mannadey is indeed
a G S Nepali composition.

Mehra says, "Surdas, whose original name was Bilwa Mangal
(before he poked burning iron rods in his eyes and lost his
sight), wrote several other bhajans in praise of Lord
Krishna, but the one used in Slumdog is not one of them."

Nepali has also emailed Vikas Swarup, the author of Q&A,
the novel on which Slumdog Millionaire is based, but he
says he has not received any response from the London-based
author.

Bollywood lyricist Sameer, who has penned over 4,000 songs
in 500 films, says, "I know that G S Nepali wrote the song
'Darshan do' for the film Narsi Bhagat. It had music by
Ravi. In fact, I met Ravi saab a couple of days ago and he
did raise the issue of how he was planning to take up the
matter of how the makers of Slumdog Millionaire overlooked
this fact. However, I'm not entirely sure of whether G S
Nepali saab was inspired by Surdas's writings or whether
'Darshan do' is a completely original piece of work."

Sameer added, "There were no stringent copyright laws in
the 50s. But I'm of the firm opinion that the original
writer should be given credit, if it is due."

Sameer also cited the example of how his song 'Chamma
Chamma' (China Gate) was used by Baz Luhrman in the Nicole
Kidman-film Moulin Rouge and how he was denied credit. "I
didn't even get a single rupee from the music company or
the foreign studio that used my song. I didn't even get an
acknowledgement. That is gross injustice to me as the
writer of the song," says Sameer.

Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star, the distributors of Slumdog
said, "We were not aware of this. We will speak to Vikas
Swarup and the people concerned in the production house.

Chennai, Sept 29 - Opportunity knocked, he opened the door.
It entered and has made him a satisfied man. He feels he is
doubly blessed, considering the difficult days of his early
life in the slums of Madipakkam. From there he entered the
premises of IIM, Ahmedabad.

But, as luck would have it, he branched into catering,
wherein he made his presence felt. 'I am proud, certainly
not vain, that I have brought great joy to those who have
been with me from them,' he said, 'That was E Sharathbabu,
a local lad, who has made the heads of many of those who
know him turn. A good number of lucrative jobs he has
refused and quite a few offers kept cropping up proving
that today's youth (he is still to touch the 30s) can face
the stiff hard-to-make-it world.

This enterprising businessman has made institution catering
his speciality and today has interests in three places up
North his first was at Ahmedabad where he studied.

This paper met him when he was in Chennai for a seminar on
'celebrating Indian entrepreneurship' and the story he told
was as fascinating and touching as the man. 'I lived in a
slum, my mother was a maid in a school. I remember selling
idlis at Re one a piece. I was in school then.' Today he
does business of Rs 1.2 lakh a day from his Institutional
Cafeterias called the Foodking spread across Ahmedabad, Goa
and Pilani in Rajasthan.

The cruel 'I won't use that word ' days have made him aware
of the plight of those with whom he grew up. 'I want to
bring these poor folks away from the suffering, the
squalour. I want them to lead a reasonably comfortable
life. Their children surely deserve a better deal, don't
you agree?' That thought stuck and he vowed he would do it.

'One way is to see that they go to work. Get them jobs,
equip them to get jobs or to be on their own.' The food
industry was the first that came to the mind. 'The large
numbers from disadvantaged backgrounds can be easily fitted
in here than in other profession,' he added.

Now employing over 170 people within a short period of one-
and- a- half years after the commencement into catering
business, he is planning to start another branch in Chennai
in a period of two months or more.

On asked the reason for starting the business in Ahmedabad,
which was inaugurated by the icon of Indian information
technology Narayanamurthy, this 29- year-old engineer
graduate from the BITS Pilani, with a management degree
from IIM Ahmedabad said that it was the vision to make his
company a national brand, which really prompted him to
start the business here.

'To make it a national brand the perception of customers
has to be kept in mind,' he said and added that being a
South Indian and starting the business from South and then
fledging to other areas would have led the people with an
impression about the company being 'southie'. But now with
well established branch in North it is the apt time to get
into the South Indian market, he opined.

Started with an investment of Rs 12 lakh, supported by
various organisation and loans from bank, Sharatbabu is
looking ahead to employ more than 10,000 people over the
next 10 years. Expanding further, he is also looking
forward to venture into the retail market.

Also talking about bringing changes in the educational
scenario in Corporation school, he emphasised the need to
promote exchange programmes between the private and
corporation school and providing free education by the
private school to economically poor students.

He said the private school should allow the students from
Corporation school to use the facilities and train them on
weekly basis to boost their confidence.

Besides this, more private organisations should take the
responsibility of educating the poor and needy children, he
added.

He opined that this would help the people as well as the
country to change gears on the road to a faster
development.

He stressed the need to work together and help the people
to come up from their poor State.

Sounds like "choorah" is some sort of derogatory term. I'll pass on that. I
just got through agreeing with another poster that maybe ganging up on you
was unfair.

This thread has gone from a banal our-women-are-prettier-than-yours argument
to something else. I'll take your word that Pakistani women are prettier
than Indian women. However, it is hard for one to judge beauty of walking
tents, which on occasion might included bearded ladies - (s)he men escaping
from police/army action. :-) Anyway, there are some strange (naïve?)
assertions in your article - assertions, I think, need some corrections.

The conspiracy angle is a nice touch. As much you want to believe that
Pakistan is completely innocent in the recent massacre in Mumbai, I want to
believe that it is not. On the one hand you accuse the Sangh Parivar of
orchestrating the massacre, and on the other, you talk of the Indian state
doing it, simply to divert attention from problems in Assam. Which one is
it? Make up your mind. The Sangh Parivar is not the same as the Indian state
[a concept that might not be immediately apparent to kooks brought up in
Islamic republics]. Or in your humble opinion they are in cahoots? Your
assertion flies in the face of internationally accepted proof. True, the
animals that washed up on Indian shores might be "non-state actors"(i.e.,
they weren't on the Pakistani government payroll and were privately
financed), but they were bred on pure Islamic hatred of all things human,
and that poison is brewed mostly in Pakistan these days. What did the
perpetrators stand to gain? Simple. An all out conflict between India and
Pakistan, would help suicidal animals get power and leverage. That the
Pakistani state would have deniability would be icing on the cake. India and
the international community have shown more than remarkable restraint in the
whole thing, partly being hamstrung by the "war on terror." Pakistan is a
prime example of blackmail.

You then move from a Sangh Parivar-Indian state conspiracy to assert that if
it weren't for Pakistan as a diversion, the Indian state ("Akhand Bharat")
would be "tored apart" [sic] by caste/class conflict. Where do you dream up
this stuff? I don't think Bollywood movies, which by your own admission, you
are "addicted to," would lead you to conclude that. As a rather ordinary
Indian, I say that Pakistan does not occupy my every waking minute. There
are other important things to worry about. But Pakistanis seem to be
obsessed with India and Indians, and will go to all kinds of extremes to
conjure up demented schemes.

Whatever "aulads" Indians are, I don't think there is anything wrong in the
following. Yes, if Kasab is from Pakistan, the Pakistani state is
responsible. Period. This is simply because of dereliction of duty of the
Pakistani state - the state (presumably represented by an elected
government) is unable to put a cork on the poison distilleries within its
borders and ensure peace in the neighborhood. I don't know of any nation on
the planet that has as much expansionist ambition as Pakistan - an ambition
to establish a caliphate from North Africa to Xinjiang. Kashmir is only a
fig leaf for such ambition. Such ambition holds the rest of the world in
contempt, and has no qualms in engaging home-bred brainwashed thugs in
achieving that goal. The claim often is that India has hegemonist designs on
Pakistan. India would be absolutely crazy to take on an additional 200
million Islamic kooks who are afraid of their own shadows.

You end your article with something absolutely dreadful. Fake degrees are
equivalent to premeditated mass murder? Who did the fake degree holders
murder? I don't know what the Sikh reference is all about.

If your interests are Bollywood or the such like, stick to that theme. Don't
dabble in stuff that you have no inkling about.
