How Hollywood systematically ruined the social fabric of the USA:
Bollywood is following Suit

WHEN SHOW BIZ BECAME LIFE BIZ:

"I am planning on getting married to Tom,�but both of us are in no
big hurry. But still both of us are cautious. He has been divorced
twice and so also�myself and don't want to get burnt. Our kids (his
and mine) have grown up, Thank God, and have family problems of their
own. Thankfully, both myself and Tom are not in regular touch with
them and hence no baggage for both of us to carry forward into our
relationship. Tom is flying in from Denver tomorrow to move in with
me.

We will take it one day at time from then. I'm excited. BTW, I'm
turning 55 tomorrow and Tom's moving in will be my best birthday
present. The thought of living alone in old age does not sound
great".

"Good for U...so happy that U have found someone and hope it works
out for U Teresa. I'm moving in with my new partner too next month.
Darla has been a revelation after all the bitter divorces that I have
been through..."

"Good on U David, hope this works out for U too.."

The above could easily be a conversation between typical Hollywood
types discussing their failed personal lives but shockingly this is
the societal norm today in adult conversations in the West. Nobody
raises eyebrows anymore about the litany of failed marriages,
separations, divorces, embittered children and step-children... the
sordid milestones of the completely failed social and family
structures in the West of today.

How Hollywood did irreparable damage to the American family....

It was in post-world war -II (WW-II) America when a libertine
cultural tidal wave swept through the land obliterating just about
anything that was so considered good in the realm of family values.
It was the days of Elvis, the Beatles, The Who, Rolling Stones, Deep
Purple and also the dawn of modern movies that advocated a spirit of
rebellion in the American youth. While mom and dad were at work, an
entire generation of Baby-Boomers were brought up on a steady diet of
such new rebel music and films. Here one could always argue that
films and music and TV were there even before WW-II, but libertine
values were not propagated through them. Here one could also argue
that not all films portray libertine values and some of them give out
very positive messages and morals for the youth. The point is
accepted, but what one does not take into account here is the
personal lives of the film stars, rock-n-rollers, and of course
sports stars. As always in life the bad things of extraordinary
people get emulated faster by youth than the good things that they
portray in public. In post WW-II America, these film, music, and
sports superstar filled a vacuum in the heart of the American youth;
a vacuum left by their working parents who were busy chasing the
dollar, life comforts, and what the media portrayed as high life.

The Blurring of the line separating REEL LIFE and REAL LIFE.

The Pre-boomers were mostly a generation bound by conservative
christian values where the Bible played a huge part in the day to day
activities of life. They maintained enough discipline in their homes
to see that there was a strong line drawn between the entertainment
world and real life. Respect for elders and institutions like
marriage was strongly endorsed. However, as these pre-boomers aged
and died out, the influence of Hollywood on the collective psyche of
Americans increased rapidly. Those movie stars that were extolled as
the very epitomes of success in a capitalist society now attained
God-like status. Whatever they said and did and the way they
conducted their lives and that included some of their mega personal
failings, became the mantra of society. And by the time the 70s and
80s came about, the line between REEL LIFE and REAL LIFE completely
vanished to the point where even normal American society started
living by the code of life set by Hollywood and embraced the values
propagated by it lock, stock, and barrel. And then it was social
mayhem all over, the bitter harvest of which America is socially
reaping today. Today America, and indeed the greater West is a
cesspool of broken marriages, step-children, third and fourth
husbands/wives, live-in partners, open gay sex and all this in the
name of unbridled freedom and liberty.

Bollywood is following suit

I still remember those days when censorship was very strong and
kissing was banned even in movies with Adult certification. Our
censors those days saw to it that our traditions and values were
still respected. As much as movie directors tried from time to time,
the censors resisted the overt propagation of libertine values even
in Adult movies. But post-liberalization in 1991, the floodgates have
been fully opened in this regard. Today most Bollywood movies have
gone to the complete aping of Hollywood in all aspects. There is open
depiction of those things that have been taboo in the past in the
misguided notion of freedom of expression. An entire generation of
our impressionable youth are being brought up on a steady diet of
these movies and also item number songs. Gay sex, multiple partners,
broken marriages seem to the norm in the movies today and this while
Amma and Appa are away working for a better home, car, and status.
The situation is down pat similar to what happened in the US during
post-WW-II. And just like the USA, we are slowly and increasingly
witnessing the beginnings of a bitter social harvest which will be in
full bloom by the time 2020 comes around. By 2020, the post-
globalization generation (those born after 1991) would be family
men/women while the older and more conservative generation of their
parents would be aging and dying out.

A Epilogue in the future.

Does not the human rights industry use the same mantra, namely "State
bad, civil society good"?� So, how come there is a sudden waking up
to the 'evils' of civil society?

Re Lord Parekh's comment about film stars of yesteryears not
appearing in advertisements.� One wonders if he is aware that there
is a huge change in the advertisement industry over the years.� I
feel that his comments do not reflect well on him.

Lord Bhikhu Parekh, Indian-origin political theorist and recipient of
Padma Bhushan, today said the new mantra of "state bad, civil society
good" was dangerous, though "understandable".

"State bad, civil society, good -- the new mantra coined by civil
society's movement against corruption is understandable, but
dangerous, because the state is not all bad, and civil society does
not consist of angels alone," he said.

UK-based Parekh, a former vice chancellor of Maharaja Sayajirao
University of Baroda (Vadodara), was here to give a talk on "the role
of civil society in the Regeneration of India', at the invitation of
Federation of Gujarat Industries.

The term civil society was a new entrant in India's political
vocabulary, he said, adding that there was a "legitimate distrust" of
the state, and civil society was expected to provide an answer to its
ills.

"Anna Hazare's fast served a most valuable purpose. I am against
fasts, but desperate times need desperate remedies, and Annaji was
right to launch it. However, I am uneasy with several aspects of it.
It need not have taken place in a public maidan (Ramlila grounds) and
turned into a theatre. Its rhetoric was inflated," he said.

"To say this is a second freedom struggle is to suggest that we have
achieved nothing since independence and to insult the memories of
Nehru, Vallabhbhai Patel, Lal bahadur Shashtri...".

Further, celebrities and Bollywood stars should not have been allowed
to address the gathering when their own record was not clean and they
had very little to say, he said.

"The dignity of Parliament should have been respected, and ultimatums
should have been avoided."

Parekh also pointed out that Hazare's role was limited to fasting,
and the negotiations for Jan Lokpal Bill were conducted by others.
Mahatma Gandhi, on the other hand, negotiated himself, he said.

Before resorting to fasting, other modes of agitation such as
rallies, demonstrations, non-payment of tax, etc should have been
used, Parekh said.� "Hazare's fast served a most noble cause. I
salute him and hope that if he does it again, some of these mistakes
will be avoided."

Summing up the political crisis in the country, he said the system
faced three crises: crisis of political authority as there was no
public figure commanding widespread respect, crisis of political
institutions, and that of political culture.

"Our political culture is weak and lacks agreement on the basic
norms," he added.

Talking about the society in general, Parekh also commented on
Amitabh Bachchan appearing in several advertisements, saying this too
reflected a kind of crisis. Yesteryear's idols like Dev Anand, Dilip
Kumar or Raj Kapoor never appeared in such kind of advertisements, he
said.

Lukhnow. Indraprasth aka New Delhi - The Mayawati Government on
Wednesday night banned the release of Prakash Jha's controversial
Hindi film Aarakshan in Uttar Pradesh for two months on the grounds
it would create law and order problem in the State.

A decision to ban the film which is due to hit the screens on Friday
was taken following a recommendation by a high level official
committee set up by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Government.

The committee comprising Principal secretaries of Finance,
Information, Higher Education and Rural Development departments and
an official of Entertainment tax commttee had watched the Amitabh
Bachchan-Saif Ali Khan starrer and submitted their report to the
State Government this evening. Hours before the UP Government imposed
the ban, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes asked the
Censor Board to make necessary changes in the film before its
release, objecting to the "derogatory way" the backward community has
been featured in it.

The move by the Commission came after its members watched a special
screening in Delhi.

I'm the best! That's one line he is known by, said Shahrukh Khan at
the launch of my latest book, Thorns to Competition, which I co-
authored with my wife Rajita. It was supposed to be a normal book
launch with Shahrukh Khan -- the man I personally think is the most
intelligent, educated, witty and charming superstar the country has.

But it turned out to be something else. Not just did Shahrukh Khan
launch the book, he also spoke in detail about how he had applied
every concept of the book in his life. And his speech became a

Washington - The number of women, both in front of and behind the
cameras, in Hollywood has dramatically fallen during the 2010-11
television season, indicating that their roles have been reduced,
says a new report.

Writers took the heaviest toll, as only 15 percent of writing jobs
for prime-time shows on major channels including ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox
and CW were occupied by women, compared to 29 percent in the 2009-10
season, says the report by the Centre for the Study of Women in
Television and Film at San Diego State University.

In direction, one of the most important spots in the trade, women
accounted for 11 percent in comparison to 16 percent in the previous
season, the study titled "Boxed In: Employment of Behind-the-Scenes
and OnScreen Women in 2010-11" said.

Other behind-the-camera jobs also suffered a tumble in numbers.
Programme creators fell to 18 percent from 21 percent, so did
producers, who fell to 37 percent from 39 percent, Xinhua reported.

The study suggested that lack of women behind the camera could have
also contributed to the lower number of women in front of the camera.

"Programmes with at least one woman creator or writer featured more
female characters than programmes with no women creators or writers,"
it said.

On-screen jobs dropped from 43 percent to 41 percent during the
season.

The researchers conducted the study from the 1995-96 season by
surveying one random episode aired by each network in a single
season.
