Great pleasure to watch a movie in Punjabi with Punjabi
musical instruments being used. The heroine is eye candy.
A little confused about why those who rob banks are martyrs
and do Sardars really drink so much in real life?
habshi@anony.net: May 30 03:01PM

The 2D version of San Andrea had richer colours than the
washed out 3D one.
3D can be made well with two cameras eg Final Destination and
that other movie where people keep getting killed after premonitions.
However when they use computers to split a movie made in 2d , the
results are awful.
The audience should be informed which 3D movie has had this
cheap trick so they dont waste their money
habshi@anony.net: May 30 02:58PM

These movies with their songs and dances and great dialogue
make them the best form of entertainment on the planet today
habshi@anony.net: May 30 02:56PM

Only movie which has raced to blockbuster status this year , five
times net cost, and now at Rs 100 crore

Saw it again , waves of pleasure from the Indian instrument music.

Human Rights and Justice in Islam

Description: A glimpse at the foundations of human rights laid by Islam.
By islam-guide.com

Islam provides many human rights for the individual. The following are some of these human rights that Islam protects.

The life and property of all citizens in an Islamic state are considered sacred, whether a person is Muslim or not. Islam also protects honor. So, in Islam, insulting others or making fun of them is not allowed. The Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, said: "Truly your blood, your property, and your honor are inviolable."[1]

Racism is not allowed in Islam, for the Quran speaks of human equality in the following terms:

"O mankind, We have created you from a male and a female and have made you into nations and tribes for you to know one another. Truly, the noblest of you with God is the most pious.[2] Truly, God is All-Knowing, All-Aware." (Quran 49:13)

Islam rejects certain individuals or nations being favored because of their wealth, power, or race. God created human beings as equals who are to be distinguished from each other only on the basis of their faith and piety. The Prophet Muhammad said: "O people! Your God is one and your forefather (Adam) is one. An Arab is not better than a non-Arab and a non-Arab is not better than an Arab, and a red (i.e. white tinged with red) person is not better than a black person and a black person is not better than a red person,[3] except in piety."[4]

One of the major problems facing mankind today is racism. The developed world can send a man to the moon but cannot stop man from hating and fighting his fellow man. Ever since the days of the Prophet Muhammad, Islam has provided a vivid example of how racism can be ended. The annual pilgrimage (Hajj) to Makkah shows the real Islamic brotherhood of all races and nations, when about two million Muslims from all over the world come to Makkah to perform the pilgrimage.

Islam is a religion of justice. God has said:

"Truly God commands you to give back trusts to those to whom they are due, and when you judge between people, to judge with justice...." (Quran 4:58)

And He has said:

"...And act justly. Truly, God loves those who are just." (Quran 49:9)

We should even be just with those who we hate, as God has said:

"...And let not the hatred of others make you avoid justice. Be just: that is nearer to piety...." (Quran 5:8)

The Prophet Muhammad said: "People, beware of injustice,[5] for injustice shall be darkness on the Day of Judgment."[6]

And those who have not gotten their rights (i.e. what they have a just claim to) in this life will receive them on the Day of Judgment, as the Prophet said: "On the Day of Judgment, rights will be given to those to whom they are due (and wrongs will be redressed)..."[7]

Footnotes:
[1] Narrated in Saheeh Al-Bukhari, #1739, and Mosnad Ahmad, #2037.
[2] A pious person is a believer who abstains from all kinds of sins, performs all good deeds that God commands us to do, and fears and loves God.
[3] The colors mentioned in this Prophetic saying are examples. The meaning is that in Islam no one is better than another because of his color, whether it is white, black, red, or any other color.
[4] Narrated in Mosnad Ahmad, #22978.
[5] i.e. oppressing others, acting unjustly, or doing wrong to others.
[6] Narrated in Mosnad Ahmad, #5798, and Saheeh Al-Bukhari, #2447.
[7] Narrated in Saheeh Muslim, #2582, and Mosnad Ahmad, #7163.

excerpt

http://www.dawn.com/news/1183128/whats-made-deepika-starrer-piku-such-a-hit

What's made Deepika-starrer Piku such a hit? - Entertainment -
DAWN.COM
A critical darling, a money-spinner and a cultural touchstone – and to
think that Piku is about bowel movements and death.

Its creator, Juhi Chaturvedi, is everybody's favourite screenwriter
for the moment. Her humourous and often touching exploration of the
frayed ties between Bhaskor Banerjee, a cantankerous and constipated
70-year-old Bengali gent, and his unmarried, harried daughter Piku, is
this year's most unlikely family outing movie.

Cinemas across the country are swelling with kids, parents and
grandparents, many of whom relate all too well to the movie's themes
of inter-generational conflict, anxieties over ageing and death, the
difficulty of taking care of ailing parents, and the necessity of
handling bodily malfunctions without emotion or embarrassment.

Directed by Chaturvedi's regular collaborator Shoojit Sircar and
starring Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Irrfan as the outsider
who wades into the family muck, Piku has cemented Chaturvedi's
reputation as one of the most empathetic and astute chroniclers of
middle-class India. Her Twitter timeline is filled with encomiums on
how she has held a mirror to basic social realities, and wherever she
turns, she is told by admirers of how Bhaskor is so uncannily like
their own silver-haired kin.

"The film appears to have touched a nerve – adults can relate to the
stress and the guilt of what Piku is going through, while kids like
the potty conversations," she said. "Finally, somebody is talking
about potty! But the film also deals with the insecurities of old age
that parents cannot directly talk about with their kids. And Shoojit
shot it all so beautifully."

The soft-voiced writer has previously worked on Sircar's Shoebite,
starring Bachchan and made in 2008 but shelved after a copyright
battle between its producers. She first came to notice for her witty
screenplay for 2012's comedy Vicky Donor, which starred Ayushmann
Khurana and was about another taboo subject, sperm donation. Vicky
Donor marked Chaturvedi as a writer to look out for, but Piku might
prove to be career-altering for the 40-year-old former advertising
professional. One of the sparks for Piku was a conversation between
Chaturvedi and Sircar about the pressures of taking care of ageing
parents. "We spoke so much about it that he said, why don't you write
something and see what happens? And shit happened!"

The daughter who was a mother
Chaturvedi based Bhaskor's character on her grandfather, who stayed
with her family while they were living in Lucknow, but a deeper
inspiration for the issues discussed in Piku is her late mother.
Mridula Chaturvedi died three years ago after suffering from various
ailments for 30 years, and her daughter had to step into the roles of
nurse and parent far too early. "My mother had hypertension and then
suffered a hemorrhage when I was in the second standard," Chaturvedi
said. The hemorrhage eventually led to kidney failure when Chaturvedi
was in her late teens, and one of the side effects of the medication
was depression.

Chaturvedi's elder brother was in boarding school, so the task of
helping nurse her mother fell on the daughter. "You become an
oncologist, a cancer specialist, a nephrologist, everything,"
Chaturvedi said. "Humour held me together. When you are sitting in a
hospital corridor for hours, how much can you grieve over things?"

She was a "very quiet" child, who kept herself occupied by helping her
grandfather with the gardening. Her eye for observation and ear for
conversational dialogue were sharpened by years of being in an
attendant's position. "When I would go to other people's houses, I
would entertain myself by looking at their photo albums and observing
how they kept their houses," she said.

Her grandfather, Dinanath Chaturvedi, and her father, Dhirendra
Chaturvedi, were both in the state education department, so her
childhood was spent in capacious government accommodation and
characterised by the Nehruvian imperative of simple living and high
thinking. Chaturvedi is from that generation of middle-class Indians
whose exposure to the movies included squatting in front of the
television set on Sundays afternoons and taking in the best of Indian
language cinema. She describes her growing-up year as being suffused
with an appreciation of the arts and literature and a disdain of
mainstream cinema. Satyajit Ray, one of Chaturvedi's favourite
filmmakers, was perfectly acceptable, but popular Hindi films were
not.

Truly a sickening movie. Almost every frame has a character ,
hero , villain , police , everyone smoking and inhaling deeply.
If a movie gets cig sponsorhip then it should say onscreen.
This movie will be seen on tv soon as it has been a flop at the
theaters and millions of gullible young Indians will take up smoking.
Surprised that Ranbir Kapoor , Deepika and Karan Johar would go along
with this nonsense.
Yeh film makers nahin sudrehenga. The Indian govt should ban
smoking in films altogether or only allow one or two depictions with
warnings of the dangers of smoking.
Movie is about a gangster who wants to be a big shot and is
manipulated by the rich men of Bombay in the 50s to shoot their
rivals. Liked the scenes of trams in Bombay , apparently taken out on
the whims of a politician.

IF THEY DON'T HAVE A ROOF, LET THEM DIE

The insensitive response in the Salman Khan case by the
actor's supporters shows a disturbing trend. The harsh
fact is: Hatred and contempt for the poor are now
integral to the mindsets of many affluent Indians

To many, the explosion of thunder and snuffle over the
Salman Khan case is now old hat, given the ephemeral
lifespan of news items. Yet aspects of it, particularly
the reactions of a significant section of India's
'beautiful people', merit attention. These reminded me of
the incident on the eve of the French Revolution in which
Marie Antoinette, told that the people were clamouring
for bread, asked why did they not eat cakes instead. On
reflection, however, the Queen of France was much kinder.
Her fault was ignorance of the fact that people desperate
for bread could not afford cakes. There was no animus
against bread-seekers.

On the other hand, implicit in what some of the actor's
fans said, and the actual words that at least a couple of
them used, displayed a distinct hatred for the poor. One
of them even asserted stridently that those who slept on
pavements deserved a dog's death! For one thing, no dog
deserves to be run over for sleeping on a pavement. For
another, people sleep on the pavement not out of choice
but for lack of the money needed for sleeping elsewhere.

The author of the obnoxious remark that the pavement-
sleepers deserved to die like dogs was either not aware
of this or justified such an end for them even though he
knew of their plight. The first possibility could only be
right if he generally lived in the midst of clouds and
occasionally visited terra firma to serve Bollywood, a
state of affairs which would not perhaps seem credible to
even the most believing mind. The alternative, that he
knew but still said what he did, indicates either or both
of two things -- his own contempt and hatred for the
poor, and the general worldview of his peer group which
made him believe that people would see nothing wrong in
his assertion.

Review: In 'Piku,' Amitabh Bachchan Plays a Dad to
Deepika Padukone

By Rachel Saltz
NYTimes.com

"Piku," an offbeat Hindi comedy, would have you
contemplate the intestines and mortality of one Bhashkor
Banerji and the actor who plays him, Amitabh Bachchan.
Bhashkor's life and conversation may revolve around his
constipation and fussy hypochondria, but there's no
mistaking the scene-stealing energy that Mr. Bachchan,
India's erstwhile Angry Young Man, musters for his new
role of Cranky Old Man.

Superstar Salman Khan gets his comeuppance

It took close to 13 years, but finally Hindi film
superstar Salman Khan has been convicted for causing the
death of a person through rash and negligent driving
under the influence of alcohol. The brouhaha that has
erupted has primarily to do with the quantum of
punishment -- five years of rigorous imprisonment.
Salman Khan's sympathisers argue that the punishment is
harsh for various reasons. The first is that others have
in the past got away with lighter sentences for similar
offences. The second is that the actor is engaged in
commendable social work, which the Mumbai Sessions Court
judge ought to have taken into consideration. And the
third is that he appears to have become a victim of the
celebrity syndrome. Because others have received lighter
sentences in previous cases, it cannot be a ground for
similar leniency. On the contrary, the argument should
be that there should be no leniency in cases where drink-
driving causes the death of people on the roads. The
fact that Salman Khan is involved in social work,
through his Being Human organisation, has no relevance
to the case at hand. Even a saint, if he is found guilty
of a crime, has to go through the rigors of punishment
the law of the land has laid down.

Why Islam is the true religion of God.

Ever since the dawn of mankind, we have sought to understand nature and our place in it. In this quest for the purpose of life many people have turned to religion. Most religions are based on books claimed by their followers to be divinely inspired, without any proof. Islam is different because it is based upon reason and proof.
There are clear signs that the book of Islam, the Quran, is the word of God and we have many reasons to support this claim:
· There are scientific and historical facts found in the Quran which were unknown to the people at the time, and have only been discovered recently by contemporary science.
· The Quran is in a unique style of language that cannot be replicated, this is known as the 'Inimitability of the Quran.'
· There are prophecies made in the Quran and by the Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, which have come to be pass.
This article lays out and explains the scientific facts that are found in the Quran, centuries before they were 'discovered' in contemporary science. It is important to note that the Quran is not a book of science but a book of 'signs'. These signs are there for people to recognise God's existence and affirm His revelation. As we know, science sometimes takes a 'U-turn' where what once scientifically correct is false a few years later. In this article only established scientific facts are considered, not just theories or hypothesis.

Scientific Facts in the Quran

The Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century.
Science at the time was primitive, there were no telescopes, microscopes or anything even close to the technology we have today. People believed that the sun orbited the earth and that the sky was held up by big pillars at the corners of a flat earth. Within this backdrop the Quran was revealed, and it contains many scientific facts on topics ranging from astronomy to biology, geology to sociology.
Some people may claim that the Quran was changed as new scientific facts were discovered but this cannot be the case because it is a historically documented fact that the Quran is preserved in its original language[1]. The Quran was written down and memorised by people during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad. One of the copies of the Quran which was written a few years after the death of the Prophet Muhammad is preserved in a museum in Uzbekistan. This copy is over 1400 years old and is exactly the same as the Arabic Quran that we have today[2].
The following are nine scientific facts found in the Quran:

1. Origin of Life

Water is essential for all living things. We all know that water is vital to life but the Quran makes a very unusual claim:
We made every living thing from water? Will they not believe? (Quran 21:30)
In this verse water is pointed out as the origin of all life. All living things are made of cells. We now know that cells are mostly made up of water[3]. For example, 80% of the cytoplasm (basic cell material) of a standard animal cell is described as water in biology textbooks.
The fact that living things consist mostly of water was discovered only after the invention of the microscope. In the deserts of Arabia, the last thing someone would have guessed is that all life came from water.

2. Iron

Iron is not natural to the earth. It did not form on the earth but came down to earth from outer space. This may sound strange but it's true. Scientists have found that billions of years ago the earth was stuck by meteorites. These meteorites were carrying Iron from distant stars which had exploded[4].
The Quran says the following on the origin of Iron:
"We sent down Iron with its great inherent strength and its many benefits for humankind." (Quran 57:25)
God uses the words 'sent down' for Iron. It is clear from the verse that Iron is not an earthly material, but was sent down for the benefit of humanity. The fact that Iron came down to earth from outer space is something which could not be known by the primitive science of the 7th century.

3. Sky's Protection

The sky plays a crucial role in protecting the earth. The sky protects the earth from the lethal rays of the sun. If the sky did not exist then the sun's radiation would have killed off all life on earth. It also acts like a blanket wrapped around the earth, to protect it from the freezing cold of space. The temperature just above the sky is approximately -270oC. If this temperature was to reach earth then the planet would freeze over instantly. The sky also protects life on earth by warming the surface through heat retention (greenhouse effect), and reducing temperature extremes between day and night[5]. These are some of the many protective functions of the sky.
The Quran asks us to consider the sky in the following verse:
"We made the sky a protective ceiling. And yet they are turning away from Our signs!" (Quran 21:32)
The Quran points to the sky's protection as a sign of God. The protective properties of the sky were discovered by scientific research conducted in the 20th century.

4. Mountains

The Quran draws our attention to a very important characteristic of mountains:
"Did We not make the earth a resting place? And the mountains as stakes?" (Quran 78:6-7)
The Quran indicates that mountains have deep roots by using the word stakes to describe them. In fact mountains do have deep roots, and the word stakes is an accurate description for them. A book titled 'Earth' by Geophysicist Frank Press explains that mountains are like stakes, and are buried deep under the surface of the earth. Mount Everest (pictured below), the height of which is approximately 9 km above ground, has a root deeper than 125 km.
The fact that mountains have deep 'stake' like roots was not known, until after the development of the theory of plate tectonics in the beginning of the 20th century.[6]

5. Expansion of the Universe

At a time when the science of Astronomy was still primitive, the expansion of the universe was described in Quran:
"And it is We who have built the Universe with [Our creative] power and keep expanding it." (Quran 51:47)
The fact that the universe is expanding was discovered in the last century. The physicist Stephen Hawking in his book 'A Brief History of Time' writes, "The discovery that the universe is expanding was one of the great intellectual revolutions of the 20th century.".
The Quran mentioned the expansion of the universe even before the invention of the telescope!

6. Sun's Orbit

In 1512 the astronomer Nicholas Copernicus put forward his theory that the Sun is motionless at the centre of the solar system, and that the planets revolve around it. The belief that the Sun is stationary was widespread amongst astronomers until the 20th century. It is now a well-established scientific fact that the Sun is not stationary, but is moving in an orbit around the centre of our Milky Way galaxy[7].
The Quran mentions the orbit of the Sun:
"It is He who created night and day, the Sun and the Moon, each floating in its orbit." (Quran 21:33)
The Quran would have been wrong according to astronomers just a couple of decades ago. But we now know that the Quranic account of the Sun's motion is consistent with modern Astronomy.

7. The Ocean

The Quran uses imagery to covey its deep meanings, here it describes the state of the unbelievers as:
"Darkness out in a deep ocean which is covered by waves, above which are waves, above which are clouds, layers of darkness, one upon the other. When one puts out his hand [therein], he can hardly see it. Those God gives no light to, they have no light." (Quran 24:40)
It is commonly thought that waves only occur on the surface of the ocean. However oceanographers have discovered that there are internal waves that take place below the surface of the ocean. These waves are invisible to the human eye, and can only be detected by specialist equipment[8]. The Quran mentions darkness in a deep ocean above which are waves, above which are waves, then clouds above that. This description is not only remarkable because it describes the internal waves in the ocean, but also because it describes darkness deep in the ocean. A human being can dive no more than 70 metres without breathing equipment. Light is present at that depth, but if we go down 1000 metres it is completely dark[9]. 1400 years ago there were no submarines or specialist equipment to discover internal waves or the darkness deep inside the oceans.

8. Lying and Movement

There was a cruel oppressive tribal leader named Abu Jahl who lived during the time of Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him. God revealed a verse of the Quran to warn him:
"No Indeed! If he does not stop, We will seize him by the forehead, his lying, sinful forehead." (Quran 96:15-16)
God does not call this person a liar, but calls his forehead (the front part of the brain) 'lying' and 'sinful', and warns him to stop.
This verse is significant for two reasons. The first is that the front part of our brain is responsible for voluntary movement[10].This is known as the frontal lobe. A book titled 'Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology' which includes the results of research on the functions of this area states: The motivation and the foresight to plan and initiate movements occur in the anterior portion of the frontal lobes, the prefrontal area[11]. The part of the brain that is responsible for movement is said to be seized if the man does not stop.
Secondly, numerous studies have shown that this same region (frontal lobe) is responsible for the lying function of the brain[12]. One such study at the University of Pennsylvania in which volunteers were asked questions during a computerized interrogation, it was found that when the volunteers were lying there was significantly increased activity in the prefrontal and premotor cortices (frontal lobe region)[13].
The front part of the brain is responsible for movement and lying. The Quran links movement and lying to this area. These functions of the frontal lobe were discovered with medical imaging equipment which was developed in the 20th century.

9. Pain Receptors

For a long time it was thought that the sense of feeling and pain was dependent on the brain. However it has been discovered that there are pain receptors present in the skin[14]. Without these pain receptors, a person would not be able to feel pain.
Consider the following verse on pain:
"We shall send those who reject Our revelations to the (Hell) Fire. When their skins have been burned away, We shall replace them with new ones so that they may continue to feel the pain: God is Almighty, All-Wise." (Quran 4:56)
God tells the people who reject his message that when they are in Hell and their skins are burnt off (so they can't feel any pain), he will give them new skins so that they continue to feel the pain.
The Quran makes it clear that pain is dependent upon on the skin. The discovery of pain receptors in the skin is a fairly recent discovery for Biology.

Conclusion

These are just some of the many scientific facts found in the Quran. It is important to note that the Quran is not a book of science, but that it is consistent with science. To claim that scientific facts in the Quran are due to coincidence would be irrational. The best explanation is that God revealed this knowledge to the Prophet Muhammad.
Just like the Quran contains knowledge about the natural world, it also contains information about the inner dimensions of our souls. It relates to our feelings, wants and needs. The Quran informs us that we have a purpose in life, and that following God's guidance will lead us to inner peace in this life, and Paradise in the hereafter. And that rejection of his message will lead to depression in this life and Hellfire after death.
"We shall show them Our signs in the Universe and within themselves, until it becomes clear to them that this is the Truth. Is it not enough that your Lord is the witness of all things?" (Quran 41:53)
